Where to stay in the Whitsundays
The first decision in a Whitsundays trip is where to base yourself — out on an island, or on the mainland at Airlie Beach. Each has a distinct feel, and many travellers combine the two. Here's how the options compare, so you can pick the right base (or bases) for your trip.
The resort islands
Only four islands offer resort stays, and each suits a different traveller. Hamilton Island is the all-rounder — its own airport, beaches, pools and every level of room from family apartments to five-star qualia. Daydream Island is family-focused and the closest to the mainland, with its outdoor Living Reef. Hayman Island — InterContinental — is the luxury flagship. And Long Island offers intimate eco-luxury at Elysian or relaxed bungalows at Palm Bay. Staying on an island means a beach on your doorstep and a proper escape, at a premium.
Airlie Beach, Cannonvale & Port of Airlie
The mainland is the more affordable, central base — and the departure point for most sailing, reef and Whitehaven tours. Airlie Beach town is the most walkable and lively; Cannonvale is quieter and better value for families; and Port of Airlie is a calm marina precinct by the ferry terminal. Where to stay: your questions
Two big choices: on an island or on the mainland at Airlie Beach. Island resorts — Hamilton (all-rounder, own airport), Daydream (family, close in), Hayman (InterContinental luxury) and Long Island (intimate) — put a beach on your doorstep. The mainland (Airlie town, Cannonvale, Port of Airlie) is more affordable and central for tours. Many visitors do both.
An island gives you the full Whitsundays escape — beaches, resort facilities and that away-from-it-all feeling — at a higher price. Airlie Beach on the mainland is cheaper, livelier and the departure point for most tours, so it's ideal if you want to sail, dive and day-trip. Hamilton Island and Daydream Island are the family favourites — Hamilton for its pools, beaches, buggies and wide range of accommodation, Daydream for its outdoor "Living Reef" and short, easy ferry from the mainland. Both are set up for children and multi-generational groups.
Hayman Island (InterContinental Hayman Great Barrier Reef) is the flagship for luxury and romance, while Elysian Retreat on Long Island is an intimate, adults-only eco-escape of around twenty guests. On Hamilton, qualia is one of Australia's most acclaimed luxury resorts. Any of the three makes a memorable special-occasion base.
