Barossa, McLaren Vale & the Hills
Adelaide is ringed by world-class wine. The Barossa Valley (about an hour north-east) is the icon — powerful Shiraz and grand estates; McLaren Vale (45 minutes south) pairs Grenache and Shiraz with the coast; and the cool Adelaide Hills are 20 minutes up the freeway. The Fleurieu & Kangaroo Island
Head south for sea and wildlife. The Fleurieu Peninsula and Victor Harbor (about 1.5 hours) offer coast, Granite Island and winter whales, while a longer day — or better, an overnight — reaches Kangaroo Island, with its sea lions at Seal Bay, koalas and the Remarkable Rocks, via the ferry from Cape Jervis. It's possible but a big day — Kangaroo Island is reached by a ferry from Cape Jervis (about 1.5–2 hours south of Adelaide, then a 45-minute crossing) or a short flight.
