Day Trips from Adelaide

One of Adelaide's great gifts is what surrounds it. Within an hour or two you can be sipping Shiraz in the Barossa, touring cellar doors by the sea at McLaren Vale, wandering the German streets of Hahndorf, or meeting sea lions on Kangaroo Island. Here are the best escapes from the capital.

Wine country

Barossa, McLaren Vale & the Hills

Adelaide is ringed by world-class wine. The Barossa Valley (about an hour north-east) is the icon — powerful Shiraz and grand estates; McLaren Vale (45 minutes south) pairs Grenache and Shiraz with the coast; and the cool Adelaide Hills are 20 minutes up the freeway. Any of them makes a superb day trip — take a Barossa or McLaren Vale wine tour so everyone can taste.

Coast & island

The Fleurieu & Kangaroo Island

Head south for sea and wildlife. The Fleurieu Peninsula and Victor Harbor (about 1.5 hours) offer coast, Granite Island and winter whales, while a longer day — or better, an overnight — reaches Kangaroo Island, with its sea lions at Seal Bay, koalas and the Remarkable Rocks, via the ferry from Cape Jervis. These make memorable escapes from the city, especially with a guide to handle the distances. See our Kangaroo Island guide.

Planning your day trips

How to do them

Match the trip to your time. The Hills, Barossa and McLaren Vale are comfortable day trips; the Fleurieu suits a long day; and Kangaroo Island really deserves an overnight. For the wine regions, a guided tour or driver means everyone can enjoy the cellar doors. We can build any of these into your Adelaide stay, logistics and all. Good to know

Day trips from Adelaide: your questions

Adelaide is blessed with world-class escapes close by. Top day trips include the Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf (20–30 min), the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale wine regions (about an hour each), the Fleurieu Peninsula and Victor Harbor (~1.5 hr), and — with an early start — Kangaroo Island (via ferry). Few cities offer so much within easy reach. See our Adelaide Hills guide.

Yes — the Barossa Valley is about an hour's drive north-east of Adelaide, making it an easy and hugely popular day trip. You can visit several cellar doors, enjoy a long lunch among the vines and see the historic towns in a day. Because you'll be tasting, take a Barossa wine tour or hire a driver. See our Barossa Valley guide for the full picture.

Easily — McLaren Vale is just 45 minutes south of Adelaide, the closest of the major wine regions, and it comes with the bonus of the Fleurieu coast alongside. A day lets you tour cellar doors, lunch with a view and dip a toe in the sea. A McLaren Vale wine tour means everyone can taste. See our McLaren Vale & Fleurieu guide.

It's possible but a big day — Kangaroo Island is reached by a ferry from Cape Jervis (about 1.5–2 hours south of Adelaide, then a 45-minute crossing) or a short flight. A one-day tour can showcase the highlights, but the island is large and most visitors find an overnight (or two) far more rewarding. If time is tight, a guided day tour handles the logistics. See our Kangaroo Island guide.

A car gives the most freedom, but it's not essential. For the wine regions, a guided tour or hired driver is ideal so everyone can taste; the Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf are reachable by bus or tour; and Kangaroo Island is done by ferry/flight plus a tour or island car hire. We can arrange day tours to all the highlights, taking the driving and planning off your hands. See our getting around guide.
