Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island, off the Fleurieu coast, is one of Australia’s great wildlife escapes — sea lions dozing on the sand at Seal Bay, koalas and kangaroos in the bush, and a rugged, beautiful coastline of national parks. Add local food, wine and honey, and it’s a destination in its own right. Reached by ferry from Cape Jervis or a short flight from Adelaide, it rewards an overnight or more. Our detailed Kangaroo Island guide has the full story.

Kangaroo Island — FAQ
What is Kangaroo Island known for?
Wildlife and wild coast — sea lions at Seal Bay, koalas, kangaroos and echidnas, and dramatic scenery like Flinders Chase National Park, the Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch, plus local food and wine. See the Kangaroo Island guide.
How do you get to Kangaroo Island?
By the SeaLink vehicle and passenger ferry from Cape Jervis (about 1.5 hours south of Adelaide; a ~45-minute crossing), or by a short flight from Adelaide. Book the ferry ahead, especially for vehicles.
Can you visit Kangaroo Island as a day trip?
It’s possible but tight — the island is large, so an overnight or multi-day trip lets you see far more of the wildlife and coast. Guided tours from Adelaide can arrange a day or longer.
How big is Kangaroo Island?
It’s Australia’s third-largest island — big enough that distances between highlights are real, which is why an overnight is recommended over a rushed day trip.
