The most convenient base is the historic town of Penola, minutes from the cellar doors, though you can also sleep among the vines or spread your wings from larger Mount Gambier to the south.

Vineyard Stays
A handful of properties offer accommodation on or beside the vineyards for an immersive overnight. Limited and popular — book ahead.
Mount Gambier
About 40–50 minutes south, with more hotels and services — handy if you’re touring the wider Limestone Coast as well.
Accommodation Tips
- Book early around the October Cabernet Celebrations, the May Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival and long weekends — rooms fill fast
- Midweek is quieter and often better value than weekends
- Staying in Penola keeps you close to cafés, pubs and a couple of town cellar doors you can walk to
- If you plan to taste widely, book a wine tour or driver so nobody has to drive back to the accommodation
- One or two nights suits most trips — enough for the cellar doors plus Penola’s heritage or a nearby detour
