Why South Australia

MacKenzie's Other Australian Course

Most golfers know Alister MacKenzie designed Royal Melbourne West (1931, World Top 10). Far fewer know he revised Royal Adelaide Golf Club at Seaton in 1926 to international championship standard — Australia's only second MacKenzie work, and one of just a handful in the southern hemisphere. The course has been ranked World Top 100 for decades and has hosted multiple Australian Opens. The genuine sandy soil at Seaton provides Sandbelt-like firm fast turf; MacKenzie's strategic bunkering and routing decisions have been preserved across nearly a century. For architecture-focused golfers who've played Royal Melbourne, Royal Adelaide is the second pilgrimage.

Beyond Royal Adelaide, the broader Adelaide member-club cluster punches above its weight. Kooyonga Golf Club at Lockleys is a heritage par 72 with mature couch fairways. Glenelg Golf Club is the par 71 beachside club. The Grange Golf Club at West Beach offers two championship layouts (East and West courses). All are private members' clubs requiring approved-tour introduction; Cooee handles the relationships. Five strong member clubs inside thirty minutes of Adelaide CBD make for a more intimate registration than Melbourne's eight-plus Sandbelt cluster, but with the same MacKenzie design heritage at the centre.

Then there's the Barossa. Seventy-five minutes north of Adelaide sits Australia's most internationally renowned wine region — Shiraz of global reputation, plus Riesling, Grenache, Mataro. Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Seppeltsfield Tawny — these are wines that built Australian wine on the world stage. Tanunda Pines Golf Club gives you a vineyard-routed par 72 in the heart of the region; cellar door touring at Penfolds, Henschke, Seppeltsfield, Yalumba, Wolf Blass, and Wolf Blass turns a 4–5 day Adelaide week into a complete golf-and-wine experience. Cellar door long lunches at Hentley Farm or fermentAsian round out the evenings.

Practical Notes

Good to Know

  • Getting there: Adelaide Airport (ADL) — direct flights from all Australian capitals (1.5 hours from Sydney/Melbourne, 2.5 from Brisbane/Perth) plus international from Singapore, Hong Kong, Doha, Auckland, and Bali. Adelaide is on Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9:30), 30 minutes behind eastern states.
  • Royal Adelaide access: Member-introduction required, 4–6 weeks lead time. Cooee handles the relationships. Kooyonga, Glenelg, The Grange follow similar protocols.
  • Best time of year: September to May is the prime SA golf window — Mediterranean climate, 18–32°C, low humidity, 300+ sunny days per year. October to December and February to April are particularly excellent. Barossa is at peak vintage in March–April.
  • Barossa Valley: 75 minutes north of Adelaide. Tanunda Pines course plus cellar doors (Penfolds, Henschke, Seppeltsfield, Yalumba, Wolf Blass). Long lunches at Hentley Farm or fermentAsian.
  • Adelaide Hills + McLaren Vale: 30 minutes east (Adelaide Hills cool-climate Pinot, Sauvignon Blanc) or 45 minutes south (McLaren Vale Shiraz). Both make natural day-trip additions.
  • Accommodation strategy: Adelaide CBD (Mayfair, Sofitel, InterContinental) for member-club focus; Glenelg waterfront for beachside; Tanunda or Marananga for Barossa wine focus.
  • Ideal trip length: 5–7 days is the sweet spot. Combine with Melbourne Sandbelt for a MacKenzie pilgrimage week — Royal Adelaide then Royal Melbourne — given they're the only two MacKenzie courses in Australia.

What Golfers Say

★★★★★

"I'd played Royal Melbourne twice. Royal Adelaide was the missing piece — MacKenzie's other Australian course, and genuinely on the same architectural level. Three days in Adelaide, two days in the Barossa with Penfolds and Henschke long lunches. Perfect introduction to South Australia for a serious golfer."

William G.

Edinburgh, Scotland

★★★★★

"The Adelaide member-club week is more intimate than Melbourne — five clubs feels right rather than the Sandbelt's eight-plus. Kooyonga the day after Royal Adelaide, then Glenelg with the beach next to it, then The Grange for thirty-six. Cooee handled every introduction; we never felt anything but welcome."

Mark R.

Sydney, NSW

★★★★★

"Tanunda Pines plus four days at the Barossa Penfolds and Henschke cellar doors made this a wine-and-golf trip rather than the other way around. The vineyard-routed par 72 is genuinely good golf, and the cellar door visits between rounds were memorable. Strong recommend."

Common Questions

South Australia Golf FAQs

Royal Adelaide Golf Club at Seaton is one of Alister MacKenzie's two Australian works (the other being Royal Melbourne West) — MacKenzie revised the routing in 1926 to international championship standard. The course has been ranked World Top 100 for decades and has hosted the Australian Open multiple times. The combination of MacKenzie's strategic design philosophy and the genuine Sandbelt-like sandy soil at Seaton makes Royal Adelaide architecturally significant — international architecture-focused golfers travel to Adelaide specifically for this course.

Adelaide Airport is South Australia's gateway with direct flights from all Australian capitals plus international services from Singapore, Hong Kong, Doha, Auckland, and Bali. Adelaide is on Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9:30), 30 minutes behind eastern states. The flight from Sydney/Melbourne is 1.5 hours; from Brisbane 2.5 hours.

Absolutely — this is the classic SA golf week. Three to four days Adelaide metro golf (Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga, Glenelg) followed by 2–3 days in the Barossa Valley (Tanunda Pines course plus cellar door touring at Penfolds, Henschke, Seppeltsfield, Yalumba, Wolf Blass). The Barossa is internationally renowned for Shiraz, Riesling, and Grenache.

September to May is the prime SA golf window — Mediterranean climate with 18–32°C, low humidity, and 300+ sunny days per year. October to December and February to April are particularly excellent. Summer (December–February) can hit 35°C+ but typically dries out by mid-afternoon. Winter (June–August) is genuinely cooler (8–16°C) with some rain but courses remain playable.

Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga, Glenelg, and The Grange all operate as private members' clubs requiring approved-tour introduction or member host access. Cooee Tours has the relationships necessary to arrange these introductions on selected dates. Lead time of 4–6 weeks is recommended; dress code is strict. Tanunda Pines and Links Lady Bay are public-access.

5–7 days is the sweet spot — 3–4 days Adelaide metro (Royal Adelaide, Kooyonga, Glenelg, plus optional Grange or warm-up round) followed by 2–3 days Barossa Valley wine + Tanunda Pines. Shorter Adelaide-only weekends (3 days) work well for Sydney/Melbourne weekend visitors.

Royal Adelaide and Royal Melbourne are both Alister MacKenzie works (1926 revisions and 1931 design respectively) — the only two MacKenzie courses in Australia. Adelaide is the smaller, more intimate of the two cities for golf with five strong member clubs versus Melbourne's eight-plus Sandbelt cluster. Both share the firm-fast strategic golf register MacKenzie's design philosophy is internationally celebrated for. Many serious architecture-focused golfers visit both.
