Cradle Mountain sits within Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, in the state's Central Highlands. Its signature view — the jagged dolerite peak reflected in the still waters of Dove Lake — is one of the most recognisable images in Australian tourism, and the reason most visitors make the trip.
It's also the northern trailhead for the Overland Track, a six-day, 65km multi-day hike widely considered one of Australia's best, running south to Lake St Clair.
What to See & Do
Dove Lake Circuit
A relatively easy 6km loop around the lake, with Cradle Mountain's reflection as the reward for most of the walk — the park's signature short walk.
The Overland Track
Tasmania's premier multi-day hike, running 65km south to Lake St Clair through alpine moorland, rainforest, and past Mount Ossa — Tasmania's highest peak.
Devils@Cradle
A wildlife sanctuary focused on Tasmanian devils and other native carnivorous marsupials, with night feeding tours.
Waldheim Alpine Spa Area
Shorter walks near the old Waldheim chalet site, through cushion plants and pencil pines unique to Tasmania's alpine country.
