Kings Park, the river & the coast
Start high in Kings Park — one of the world's largest inner-city parks, bigger than Central Park, with sweeping city views and a blaze of wildflowers each spring. Down at river level, Elizabeth Quay and the Swan River buzz with dining and ferries, while the Indian Ocean beaches — Cottesloe, Scarborough and City Beach — deliver golden sand and those famous sunsets. Heritage, markets & the port
A short train or river cruise away, Fremantle is Perth's characterful port city — a treasure of preserved heritage streetscapes, the lively Fremantle Markets, a thriving craft-beer and coffee culture, and the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison. Wander the Cappuccino Strip, catch the street art and live music, and soak up the arty, salty atmosphere. It's also the main departure point for Rottnest Island ferries — easy to combine in a day.
Swan Valley & day trips
Perth's surrounds reward easy day trips. The Swan Valley — WA's oldest wine region, just 25 minutes out — packs wineries, breweries and produce into a relaxed loop. Fremantle ("Freo"), at the mouth of the Swan River, is Perth's soulful port city — famous for its beautifully preserved heritage streetscapes, the buzzing Fremantle Markets, a thriving craft-beer and café scene, and the World Heritage-listed Fremantle Prison (a former convict site). Cappuccino Strip, the harbour, street art and live music give it a distinct, arty character. It's an easy train or river-cruise trip from central Perth.
The Swan Valley is Western Australia's oldest wine region, only about 25 minutes from central Perth — a compact loop of wineries, breweries, distilleries and produce stops. It's perfect for a relaxed food-and-wine day out without a long drive, known for fortifieds, Chenin Blanc and Verdelho, plus family-friendly farm gates. It makes a great half- or full-day escape, and pairs well with a visit to nearby Guildford's heritage streets.
Take a ferry — services run from Fremantle (about 30 minutes), Perth's Barrack Street Jetty (via the river) and Hillarys Boat Harbour. Rottnest is car-free, so you get around by bike, the island bus or on foot. It's an easy and hugely popular day trip, though staying overnight lets you enjoy the beaches once the day crowds leave.
