An Honest Introduction

The Gold Coast, two trips in one

Queensland's golden beach belt — and Australia's most underrated rainforest plateau, all on the same postcode.

The Gold Coast splits into two travel circuits the marketing rarely talks about. The obvious one — Surfers Paradise high-rises, theme parks, beach-tower clichés — is the version that fills the brochures. The quieter one — Burleigh's headland and dining strip, Coolangatta's surf-town authenticity, the Gondwana-rainforest hinterland 45 minutes inland — is what makes the region genuinely worth more than a long weekend.

The coast itself is 57 kilometres long. Surfers Paradise is the high-rise tourist centre. Broadbeach is the slightly-quieter, more sophisticated middle. Burleigh Heads is the village foodies and surfers gravitate to. Currumbin and Coolangatta are the southern, more relaxed beach towns. All flagged and patrolled in summer; all surfable; all walking distance from somewhere good to eat. North of all that sit the four theme parks (Dreamworld, Sea World, Movie World, Wet'n'Wild) — each with a different audience, all extraordinarily efficient at separating tourists from cash but genuinely fun.

This guide structures the Gold Coast around four sections — beaches, theme parks, wildlife and the inner city, and the rainforest hinterland — plus a 3-day itinerary that pulls a balanced trip together. Whether you're a family doing all four theme parks, a couple holed up at a Burleigh boutique stay, or a hinterland-curious traveller who'd rather hike than queue for the Tower of Terror, the Gold Coast can be done well.

01

Beaches — Six Coastal Stops

Six distinct beaches running 57km from Main Beach in the north to Snapper Rocks in the south. Each with a different character — pick your tempo.

6 Beaches

Surfers Paradise Beach

Half day+ Free Central Gold Coast

The postcard beach — three kilometres of sand backed by the iconic high-rise skyline, including the 322-metre Q1 Tower (until recently the tallest residential building in the southern hemisphere). Lifeguard-patrolled, surfable, and the beach the whole world thinks of when they think Gold Coast. Cavill Avenue, the main pedestrian beachfront strip, runs the dining, shopping and nightlife of central Surfers. Crowded but unmistakably the iconic Gold Coast experience.

SkyPoint at Sunset The SkyPoint Observation Deck on the 77th floor of Q1 (around AUD $30) gives you the postcard view of the entire Gold Coast. Time it for sunset — the lights coming on along the high-rise strip is genuinely beautiful.

Burleigh Heads

Half day+ Free beach 20 min south of Surfers

Locals' choice. The Burleigh Heads National Park headland walk is an easy 45-minute coastal loop with panoramic ocean views; the Burleigh Point surf break at the southern end is one of Australia's classic right-handers; James Street is the dining and craft-beer strip the rest of Australia knows about. Burleigh Pavilion (beachfront bar) does the best Friday-evening sundowner on the coast. Family-friendly flagged swimming corridor at the main beach.

James Street Dining Rick Shores (Asian on the beach), Light Years (Vietnamese), Beachcomber and the Pavilion are the Burleigh dining essentials. Bookings 1-2 weeks ahead for weekends. Walk the headland in the morning, eat in the village.

Broadbeach

Half day+ Free beach 5 min south of Surfers

The middle ground — high-rise convenience without the Surfers Paradise chaos. Pacific Fair (Australia's largest shopping centre), Star Casino Gold Coast, and the Oracle dining precinct are all here. The beach is wide, calm, lifeguard-patrolled, and the backstreets have surprisingly good cafés and restaurants (Kiyomi, Lupo, BlackBird Café). Best base for travellers who want walkable convenience without the Surfers tourist crush.

Pacific Fair Pacific Fair is genuinely worth a visit even if you don't intend to shop — Australia's largest shopping centre, with hundreds of stores including major Australian designers. Free parking, lift to the G:Link light rail.

Currumbin Beach & Elephant Rock

Half day Free 30 min south of Surfers

A quieter, more local beach — the Currumbin Creek mouth provides a calm-water swim spot that's perfect for kids, while Elephant Rock at the headland is one of the Gold Coast's most photographed sunrise spots. The annual Anzac Day dawn service at Elephant Rock is iconic. Currumbin Alley delivers reliable surf for beginners and longboarders. Walking distance to the famous Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary.

Sunrise at Elephant Rock Climb up to Elephant Rock (5 min walk from the carpark) for the Gold Coast's best sunrise — the rising sun frames the lifeguard tower silhouette perfectly. Locals run the headland in the early morning.

Coolangatta & Snapper Rocks

Half day Free 40 min south

The Gold Coast's southern surf town — Coolangatta sits at the NSW border, with Snapper Rocks (one of the world's most consistent right-hand point breaks) at its southern tip. The 6km Rainbow Bay to Greenmount walking track loops the entire headland. Annual home of the WSL Quiksilver Pro surf event each March. More mellow than Surfers, more authentic than Broadbeach, with a proper surf-town café scene around Marine Parade.

Watch the Pros at Snapper Snapper Rocks works on a south-east swell — when it's "on", the world's best surfers paddle out alongside locals. Even non-surfers should walk the headland at sunset; the wave watching is mesmerising.

Tallebudgera Creek

Half day Free Between Burleigh and Palm Beach

The calmest swim on the entire Gold Coast — a tidal creek mouth between Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach with gin-clear water, sandy bottom, no waves and a lifeguard tower. Perfect for kids, paddleboarding, and anyone wanting to swim without battling surf. The grassy parkland on both banks has BBQs, shaded picnic tables and the bridge over the creek mouth gives the postcard photo. Free parking; busy but never overwhelming.

Stand-Up Paddle Tallebudgera Creek is the Gold Coast's best stand-up paddleboarding spot — flat, protected, scenic. Hire SUPs from Wynter Wynter at Burleigh (around AUD $30/hr). Paddle up the creek for 30 minutes for the quiet section.

Theme Parks — Australia's Capital

Four major theme parks within 20 minutes of one another. The world's only such cluster outside Orlando. Pick one for a day; pick three for a week.

4 Theme Parks

Dreamworld

Full day From $109 Coomera (north)

Australia's largest theme park, with the widest variety — thrill rides (Steel Taipan, the Tower of Terror II, Giant Drop), kids' areas (DreamWorks Experience with Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda), and the Tiger Island wildlife enclosure with Sumatran and Bengal tigers. Combo pass with the adjacent WhiteWater World waterpark adds value in summer. Best single-park choice for thrill seekers and families with mixed-age kids.

Mega Pass for Multi-Park If visiting 2+ parks, the Mega Pass (Dreamworld + WhiteWater World + SkyPoint, around AUD $159) is excellent value. Books out for school holidays — buy 1-2 weeks ahead.

Sea World

Full day From $109 Main Beach (north)

The Gold Coast's marine theme park — dolphins, sharks, sea lions, polar bears and penguins, plus rides and roller coasters. Sea World Resort is a popular family stay with monorail directly to the park. Best balance of rides and animal experiences for families with kids 3-10. The new Atlantis-themed expansion opened in 2024 with three additional rides. Animal welfare credentials have improved markedly over the past decade.

Resort + Monorail Staying at Sea World Resort gives you free park entry for the duration of your stay plus the monorail directly into the park — a brilliant family option.

Warner Bros Movie World

Full day From $109 Oxenford (north)

Australia's biggest movie-themed park — superhero rides (DC Rivals HyperCoaster, Batman's Justice League ride), the Hollywood Stunt Driver show, daily parades with character meet-and-greets (Batman, Joker, Looney Tunes). Best appeal for tweens and teens, plus film fans. The DC Rivals HyperCoaster is the southern hemisphere's tallest, longest and fastest coaster (115km/h, 61.6m drop). Solid full day even if you're not into theme parks normally.

VIP Pass Worth It The Express Pass (around AUD $50 extra) lets you skip the queues — invaluable for school holiday peak periods when wait times stretch to 60+ minutes for major rides.

Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast

Full day From $89 Oxenford (next to Movie World)

Australia's largest water theme park — 40+ slides and rides, a wave pool, lazy river, kids' areas. The Aqualoop and the Tornado are the headline thrill slides; Whirlpool and Mammoth Falls for groups. Best in summer (December-February) when the heat makes water-based parks the obvious choice. Closed or limited operations in winter (June-August) due to the cooler weather. Cheaper than the dry-park entries, particularly with combo Mega passes.

Pair With Movie World Wet'n'Wild and Warner Bros Movie World share the same site — split the day if you have the energy, or use a combo pass over two days. Wet'n'Wild for the heat of midday, Movie World rides for the cooler morning and evening.
Theme park bundle savings
The Mega Pass bundles Movie World, Sea World, Wet'n'Wild and Paradise Country into one pass — unlimited entry for 14 days. From AUD $189 (vs $400+ at the gate). We can arrange.

Wildlife, City & Nightlife

Five experiences beyond the beach and theme parks — wildlife, observation decks, markets, and a slice of the after-dark Gold Coast.

5 City Spots

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary

Half day From $59 Currumbin

The Gold Coast's standout wildlife experience and one of Australia's best — 27 hectares of natural bushland with wild lorikeet feeding twice daily (8am and 4pm, free to watch from the Lorikeet Arena), koala photos, hand-feeding kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, dingoes and crocodiles. The Wildlife Hospital tour shows real rescue work in progress. Ethical, educational, and consistently top-rated by international visitors.

Lorikeet Feeding Free The 8am and 4pm wild lorikeet feedings at the Lorikeet Arena are free to watch — you don't need a sanctuary ticket. Park, walk in, and enjoy hundreds of wild rainbow lorikeets descending for breakfast.

SkyPoint Observation Deck (Q1)

1–2 hrs From $30 Q1 Tower, Surfers

The 77th-floor observation deck of the Q1 Tower (322m, until recently the southern hemisphere's tallest residential building). The express elevator hits the top in 43 seconds. Glass-walled deck gives 360° views from the hinterland to the coast and the high-rise strip. The SkyPoint Climb (around AUD $89) lets you walk the external structure for the bucket-list version. Best at sunset when the city lights up.

SkyPoint Climb For the adventurous, the SkyPoint Climb walks you up the external spire to 270m above sea level — Gold Coast's answer to the Sydney Bridge climb. About 90 minutes, harnessed throughout, brilliant photos.

Pacific Fair & Star Casino

Half day+ Free to wander Broadbeach

Australia's largest shopping centre — over 400 stores including major Australian designers (Camilla, Aje, Bassike), international luxury brands and a "Resort Style" outdoor luxury precinct. The adjacent Star Gold Coast (Casino, Sheraton Grand Mirage, multiple restaurants) is the Gold Coast's premier evening entertainment hub — comedy clubs, the Cherry rooftop bar, fine dining (Mei Wei, Atrium Grill). Together they form the city's main rainy-day backstop.

Tax Refund International visitors can claim TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) on Australian-purchased goods — especially worth doing for designer fashion at Pacific Fair. Process at Gold Coast Airport before departure.

Cavill Avenue & Orchid Avenue

Evening Free to wander Surfers Paradise

Surfers Paradise's after-dark heart — Cavill Avenue's pedestrian mall buzzes from 6pm with street performers, restaurants and nightclubs. Orchid Avenue runs the rowdier "Schoolies" strip (peak November-December for high-school graduates). The night markets every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evening (5-10pm) are a more family-friendly alternative. Late-night eats at Hash Specialty Coffee or 24-hour McDonald's. Loud, brash, undeniably Surfers.

Avoid Schoolies Schoolies (mid-November to mid-December) brings 50,000+ school graduates and turns Surfers into a noisy chaos. Either come for the energy if you want to, or actively avoid these dates.

The Spit & Burleigh Beach Markets

Half day Free Main Beach + Burleigh

The Spit (Main Beach) is the Gold Coast's quietest beach precinct — a long sand spit with calm Broadwater paddling on one side and ocean surf on the other. Sea World docks here. The Sunday Burleigh Beach Markets (under the pines, 7am-1pm) are the city's standout weekly market with craft, food trucks, live music and fresh produce. Both make for wonderful early-morning escapes from the crowds.

Burleigh Markets Sunday The Burleigh Heads Beach Markets on the first Sunday of every month are the best on the Gold Coast — local makers, artisan food, live music, beachfront setting. Arrive by 9am for the best stalls.
04

Hinterland — UNESCO Rainforest

45 minutes inland from the coast, the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage area covers Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook and Lamington National Parks. Six hinterland experiences worth the drive.

6 Hinterland Spots

Tamborine Mountain

Full day Free village 45 min west

The hinterland's most accessible escape — a rainforest-clad plateau village 45 minutes from the coast. Gallery Walk is the main drag with 100+ artisan shops, German beer halls, fudge factories and the Tamborine Distillery. The Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk takes you 30m above the canopy on a 1.5km elevated walk. Witches Falls National Park has a superb 3km rainforest loop. Plus the small but excellent Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Sirromet-rivalling Mason Wines.

Skywalk Then Gallery Walk Do the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk in the morning (cooler walking conditions), then lunch and browse Gallery Walk in the afternoon. End with sunset at Mt Tamborine Brewery — the deck has the best hinterland-to-coast view.

Springbrook National Park

Full day Free 50 min south-west

UNESCO World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests — ancient remnant of the supercontinent that once covered Australia. The Best of All Lookout (the park's namesake) gives an extraordinary ocean-to-inland view across the remnant Tweed Volcano caldera. Purling Brook Falls drops 109m through rainforest. Twin Falls Circuit is the classic walk. The Natural Bridge cave (free) hosts a glow-worm colony — visit at dusk for one of Queensland's great free natural spectacles.

Natural Bridge Glow-Worms Arrive at the Natural Bridge carpark by 5pm for the 1km walk down to the cavern, timing it for full darkness. The glow-worm colony in the rock chamber is unforgettable. Bring a torch (red filter) for the walk back.

Lamington National Park

Full day or overnight Free park 1.5 hrs south-west

The serious hinterland — over 200km of walking trails through proper Gondwana Rainforest, ancient Antarctic beech forest, more than 500 waterfalls. O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat (Green Mountains section) has the famous wild-bird-feeding deck plus the iconic Treetop Walk (1km elevated boardwalk through the canopy). Binna Burra Lodge (the other entrance) offers the more rugged experience after the 2019 bushfires. Worth an overnight stay if you can.

Stay Overnight at O'Reilly's Day-tripping Lamington works but you'll wish you'd stayed. O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat (eco-cabins from $280/night) gives you dawn bird-feeding, the Treetop Walk without crowds, and access to the longer trails. Books out 2 months ahead.

Tamborine Wine & Distillery Trail

Full day Tour from $169 Tamborine

Tamborine Mountain has quietly become Queensland's most accessible wine region — Mason Wines, Witches Falls Winery, Cedar Creek Estate and Albert River Wines all offer cellar-door tastings. The Tamborine Mountain Distillery makes excellent gin and absinthe. Add Robyn Rowe Chocolates for tastings, the Witches Chase Cheese Factory and the Cuckoo Clock Nest for the German bakery — the makings of a perfect long-lunch hinterland day. Book a guided tour to skip the driving.

Tour, Don't Drive Driving the Tamborine wine route requires designated driver discipline that ruins the experience. Guided wine tours from the Gold Coast (around $169pp) include all transfers, 4 cellar doors and a long cheese-and-meat lunch.

Sirromet Wines

Half day Tastings $15 45 min north

Queensland's largest winery — between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, with award-winning cool-climate Verdelho, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. The cellar door, Lurleen's Restaurant (modern Australian fine dining with vineyard views), and an outdoor concert amphitheatre (regular summer A-list acts) make it a destination in its own right. Brilliant alternative to Tamborine if you'd rather one big winery than a multi-stop trail.

Lurleen's Lunch Lurleen's Restaurant at Sirromet does an exceptional Sunday lunch — vineyard views, well-paired wines, two-course menu around AUD $89. Bookings essential, 2-3 weeks ahead.

Hot Air Ballooning the Hinterland

Half day From $349 Hinterland

A pre-dawn hot-air balloon flight over the Gold Coast hinterland — sunrise over the Lamington Plateau, with the Pacific Ocean glittering on one horizon and the Brisbane skyline visible on the other. Operators (Hot Air, Balloon Down Under) include hotel pickup, a 30-minute flight, vineyard champagne breakfast, and back to your accommodation by 9am. One of the most peaceful, unexpectedly beautiful Gold Coast experiences.

Combine with Wine Day Many operators bundle the balloon flight with a Tamborine Wine Tour — the breakfast vineyard becomes the first cellar door of a long lunch day. Brilliant value combination.
Hinterland in one expert day
Our small-group Hinterland Highlights day pairs Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook and the Natural Bridge glow-worms — local guide, all transfers, lunch at a hinterland brewery. From AUD $189pp.

When to Visit

Gold Coast by Season

300+ sunny days a year, but the right season depends on what you've come for.

Spring
Sep – Nov
15–27°C
Cooee's pick. Warm enough for beach swimming, mild evenings, blue-sky days, before the summer humidity. Whales still passing the coast in September. Schoolies in late November-early December takes over Surfers — book away from those dates.
Summer
Dec – Feb
22–30°C
Peak Australian holiday season. Hot, humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Theme parks at their most crowded; beach swimming the most pleasant. New Year's Eve fireworks over the beach are legendary. Book accommodation 4+ months ahead for late December-January.
Autumn
Mar – May
14–26°C
The humidity drops, the beaches stay warm. The Quiksilver Pro surf event at Snapper Rocks runs in March. Easter is a peak family holiday window. Best mix of warm beach days and cool hinterland mornings — ideal for a balanced trip.
Winter
Jun – Aug
9–22°C
Surprisingly mild — 21-22°C blue-sky days are the norm, though evenings drop to single digits. Whale migration peaks July-October (whale watching tours from Sea World marina excellent). Theme parks quietest. Hinterland walking conditions perfect.
Avoid Schoolies if you can

Schoolies Week (mid-November to mid-December) brings 50,000+ school graduates to Surfers Paradise for end-of-school celebrations. The CBD becomes loud, chaotic, and not what most travellers want. Either embrace the energy if that's your scene, or actively avoid these dates. Burleigh, Coolangatta and the hinterland remain calm throughout.

Practical Matters

Getting Around the Gold Coast

Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) is your fastest entry, with Brisbane Airport one hour north as the bigger international option. The G:link light rail and a hire car together cover everything.

Rental Car

Essential for theme parks and hinterland. All major brands at Gold Coast and Brisbane airports. Free or cheap parking at most theme parks; meter parking on the coast. Drive on the left; speed cameras enforced.

G:link Light Rail

The G:link tram runs from Helensvale (Brisbane Airtrain interchange) through Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach South. Cheap (single fare around $4.30, daily cap $10), frequent (every 7-15 min). Best way to move between the central beach precincts without driving.

Uber & Taxis

Uber operates throughout the Gold Coast and is generally the cheapest way to move between precincts. Theme parks all have Uber pickup zones. 13CABS for traditional taxis. Both more expensive at Schoolies and major event windows.

Theme Park Shuttles

Many Surfers Paradise hotels run free or low-cost shuttles to the major theme parks. Themepark Transfers and ConXion run paid shuttles from $20 return. Saves the parking fees and the M1 traffic on weekends and school holidays.

Airport tip: Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) is 25 minutes south of Surfers — Uber around AUD $50, airport shuttle $25. Brisbane Airport is 75 minutes north and the bigger international hub; the Airtrain to Helensvale + G:link tram is a smooth alternative if you don't need a car.

We came for the theme parks with the kids, but the Cooee team convinced us to add a hinterland day. Tamborine Skywalk in the morning, glow-worms at Natural Bridge at dusk — our 9-year-old still talks about it. The Gold Coast can be more than Surfers Paradise high-rises if you let it. Best family holiday we've done.

Essential Gold Coast Tips

The things every first-time visitor should know before arriving.

UV Is Severe

Queensland UV is the strongest in Australia — extreme readings even in autumn and winter. SPF 50+ broad spectrum, real broad-brimmed hat, and shade-seeking from 10am-3pm. You can burn in 15 minutes here even on overcast days. Reef-safe sunscreen if you're snorkelling.

Swim Between the Flags

All major Gold Coast beaches are lifeguard-patrolled with red and yellow flag corridors. Always swim between them — rip currents are real and the surf can be powerful. Strong swimmers still drown each year on unpatrolled stretches. The flags aren't suggestions.

Mega Pass for Theme Parks

If you're doing 2+ theme parks, the Mega Pass (Movie World + Sea World + Wet'n'Wild + Paradise Country, around AUD $189) saves significant cash versus single-day tickets. Adds 14 days of unlimited entry. Always pre-book online.

Avoid Schoolies Window

Mid-November to mid-December turns Surfers Paradise into Schoolies central — 50,000+ school graduates, loud nightlife, accommodation shortages. If your trip falls in this window, base in Burleigh, Broadbeach or the Hinterland instead. Outside Schoolies, the same area is family-perfect.

Tipping Not Expected

Service is included in Australian wages. Tipping isn't standard anywhere on the Gold Coast. Round up or leave 10% for exceptional restaurant service if you wish, but it's optional. No pressure at cafés, bars or markets.

Hire a Car (Mostly)

The G:link tram covers central beach precincts well, but a rental car is essentially required for theme parks, hinterland, and southern beaches. The M1 motorway is fast and free. Most accommodation has parking; theme parks charge $25-30/day for parking.

Family-Travel Heaven

Australia's most family-tourism-mature destination. Family rooms, pool resorts, kid-friendly restaurants, kid-friendly attractions all built in. Very pram-friendly footpaths. Stinger nets at all major beaches in summer. Calm-water swims at Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creek.

Combine with Brisbane

Brisbane is one hour north — easy add-on. The Airtrain runs hourly from Brisbane CBD to Helensvale (Gold Coast G:link interchange). Many international visitors split: 3 nights Brisbane / 4 nights Gold Coast. Or fly into Brisbane and out of Coolangatta to save backtracking.

Hinterland Adds a Whole Trip

Most international visitors miss the hinterland completely. Don't. The Gondwana Rainforest 45 minutes inland is one of the best free natural experiences in Australia — and the contrast with the high-rise coast makes both halves more memorable.

Frequently Asked

Gold Coast Travel Questions

The questions we answer most often for travellers planning a Gold Coast trip.

What are the top things to do on the Gold Coast?
The Gold Coast essentials are: (1) Surfers Paradise Beach + SkyPoint Observation Deck, (2) Burleigh Heads National Park headland walk plus the village dining scene, (3) Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary for koalas, kangaroos and the daily lorikeet feeding, (4) one major theme park (Dreamworld, Sea World or Warner Bros Movie World), and (5) a hinterland day in Tamborine Mountain or Springbrook National Park. These five capture the coast, the wildlife, the theme-park energy and the UNESCO rainforest above the city.
How many days do you need on the Gold Coast?
Three days covers the essentials — one beach day, one theme park, one hinterland trip. Five to seven days lets you do multiple theme parks, explore Burleigh and Coolangatta properly, and do the Springbrook + Lamington rainforest justice. Most international visitors combine 3-4 nights here with a Brisbane city stay or as a Cairns/Sydney trip extension.
When is the best time to visit the Gold Coast?
Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) offer ideal beach weather (24–27°C) without summer's humidity or crowds. Summer (December–February) is hot, humid and busy — peak Australian holiday season with theme parks at their loudest. Winter (June–August) surprises with mild 19–22°C days, perfect for hinterland walks; humpback whale migration peaks July–October.
Which Gold Coast theme park is best?
It depends on age and interest. Dreamworld for thrill seekers (Australia's biggest variety of rides). Sea World for families with younger kids and animal experiences (dolphins, polar bears, sea lions). Warner Bros Movie World for film fans and superhero rides (Batman, Justice League, DC Rivals). Wet'n'Wild for water-park thrills in summer. A multi-park pass (Mega Pass) is the best value if visiting 2+ parks.
Should I stay in Surfers Paradise or Burleigh Heads?
Surfers Paradise for first-timers, families with theme-park focus, nightlife and shopping — central to most attractions. Burleigh Heads for couples, foodies, and surfers wanting a more sophisticated, less crowded base. Broadbeach is the middle ground (high-rise convenience without the chaos). Coolangatta works for surf-purists wanting Snapper Rocks. Most travellers staying 5+ nights split between two areas.
How do I get to the Gold Coast from Brisbane?
Brisbane is one hour north by car (M1 Pacific Motorway). Airtrain runs from Brisbane Central Station to Helensvale (1 hour, around AUD $26), connecting to the G:link light rail down through Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach. Greyhound and Premier coach services run hourly (around AUD $25, 90 minutes). Most international visitors fly into Gold Coast Airport (Coolangatta) directly — Jetstar, Virgin and AirAsia have regular services from Asia and other Australian capitals.
Is the Gold Coast good for families with kids?
Outstanding — Australia's most family-focused destination. Four major theme parks, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, calm-water beaches at Burleigh and Tallebudgera Creek, the Wet'n'Wild waterpark, the SkyPoint Observation Deck, and the Bluey's World immersive experience (now relocated to Brisbane). Most accommodation offers family rooms; theme park packages bundle multi-day passes economically.
What is the Gold Coast hinterland?
The Gold Coast hinterland is the rainforest-clad plateau 45-60 minutes inland — including Tamborine Mountain (artisan villages, wineries, Skywalk), Springbrook National Park (waterfalls, Best of All Lookout, Natural Bridge glow-worm cave) and Lamington National Park (proper World Heritage Gondwana rainforest, Binna Burra and O'Reilly's lodges). Cooler than the coast, dramatically more beautiful, and Australia's most accessible UNESCO rainforest. Worth a full day, ideally two.
