Planning notes
New Caledonia is the closest you get to France without leaving the Pacific — about two and a half hours from Brisbane, with the food and prices that implies. The lagoon is the reason to come and is genuinely world-class. September to December is the best window; January to March carries cyclone risk. French is the working language, though English is spoken in the tourist areas.
