The Byron Bay hinterland
Turn your back on the sea and Byron's other half opens up: a rolling green hinterland of heritage villages, macadamia farms, ancient rainforest and waterfalls, all cradled in the vast caldera of an extinct volcano. Bangalow, Nimbin, Minyon Falls and the World-Heritage forests of Nightcap National Park are all within an easy drive — and the region's markets and food-and-farm trail make it some of the best eating and exploring in the country.
Bangalow, Brunswick Heads & Nimbin
Each hinterland village has its own flavour. Bangalow, 15 minutes inland, is the polished favourite — a heritage main street of cafés, providores and boutiques with a great monthly market. Brunswick Heads, just north on the coast, is a laid-back river town of fish and chips and old pubs. Mullumbimby is the quirky, community-minded 'biggest little town'. And Nimbin, further inland, is the famously alternative village worth a curious half-day. Together they're the soul of the Northern Rivers.
Nightcap National Park & Minyon Falls
Behind the villages rises Nightcap National Park, part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area — ancient subtropical rainforest, sweeping caldera lookouts and the region's finest waterfalls. The showpiece is Minyon Falls, a 100-metre cascade into a palm-filled gorge, with an easy lookout and longer walks to the base. Add Killen Falls and the Whian Whian trails, and you have a superb day of rainforest walking within 30–45 minutes of the coast.
Wollumbin (Mount Warning) & Crystal Castle
Dominating the caldera to the north is Wollumbin (Mount Warning), the eroded core of the ancient volcano and the first place on the mainland to catch the sunrise. It is deeply sacred to the Bundjalung people, and the summit climb is now permanently closed at their request — please admire it from the lookouts rather than climbing. For a gentler day, Crystal Castle near Mullumbimby offers landscaped gardens, giant crystals, a rainforest walk and one of the region's loveliest outlooks.

Bangalow is only about 15 minutes (14 km) inland from Byron Bay — an easy drive or day trip. This pretty heritage village has a lovely main street of cafés, boutiques and providores, a monthly market, and makes a quieter, often better-value base than Byron itself.

Wollumbin is a deeply sacred site to the Bundjalung people, who ask that visitors do not climb it, and the summit walk has been permanently closed. You can still appreciate the mountain — the eroded core of an ancient volcano — from lookouts and from other walks in the surrounding Nightcap and Border Ranges parks.
Nimbin is one of Australia's most famous alternative-lifestyle villages — colourful, counter-cultural and unlike anywhere else, about 45 minutes from Byron. It's a fun half-day for its murals, museum, markets and rainforest surrounds. It has a well-known reputation, so go with an open mind; nearby the beautiful Nightcap National Park and waterfalls are the real scenic draw.
