The markets of Byron Bay
Few parts of Australia do markets like the Northern Rivers. Between Byron's monthly community market, its weekly farmers market and a rotating circuit of village markets in the hinterland, there's almost always one on — brimming with local produce, craft, music and street food. They're free, family-friendly and one of the best ways to taste and feel the region. Here's the calendar and how to make the most of it.
Byron Community & Farmers markets
The Byron Community Market, on the first Sunday of each month at Butler Street Reserve, is the region's big gathering — hundreds of stalls of fashion, art, plants and food, with live music and a festival buzz. For produce, the Byron Farmers Market runs every Thursday morning at the same reserve, where growers, bakers and makers sell straight to you: the freshest breakfast in town. Both are free; arrive early for parking and the best pickings.
Bangalow, The Channon & beyond
The hinterland markets are worth planning a Sunday around. The Bangalow Market (fourth Sunday) is many people's favourite — a beautiful village setting, quality craft and food. The Channon Craft Market (second Sunday) is the classic, long-running hinterland market amid rainforest country. Others rotate through Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads and Uki. Combine any of them with a waterfall walk or a village lunch for a lovely day inland.
Making the most of it
Come early for parking, cooler weather and the best produce. Bring a reusable bag, a hat and some cash (many but not all stalls take cards). If you're staying self-catered, the Thursday farmers market is the place to stock up on local fruit, cheese, coffee and bread. And pace yourself on the street food — the Northern Rivers' bakers, juicers and food trucks are very good.
Byron's markets: your questions
The big one is the Byron Community Market, held on the first Sunday of each month in Butler Street Reserve. The weekly Byron Farmers Market runs every Thursday morning (from about 7–8am) at the Butler Street Reserve too. Beyond town, the Bangalow Market is the fourth Sunday, and The Channon Craft Market the second Sunday — so most weekends there's a market on somewhere.
