Getting to & around Byron Bay
Byron Bay isn't on the rail network, so getting there means flying into a nearby airport and transferring in by shuttle, car or coach — and getting around is a mix of walking the compact town and driving (or touring) the spread-out hinterland. Here's how the airports, transfers and local transport work, so arriving and exploring is easy.
The airports & transfers
Two airports serve Byron. Ballina Byron Gateway (BNK), 30 minutes south, is the closest, with flights to Sydney and Melbourne. The larger Gold Coast Airport (OOL), 45–60 minutes north at Coolangatta, has many more flights (and some international), and is a popular gateway. Brisbane (BNE) is about 2–2.5 hours' drive. From any of them, a pre-booked shuttle, rideshare, taxi or hire car gets you to town — we're happy to arrange transfers.
Getting around town & beyond
Central Byron is small and flat — you can walk or cycle to the beaches, cafés and the start of the lighthouse walk, and many visitors happily go car-free in town. Local and regional buses use the NSW Opal system (tap on with an Opal or contactless card; fares are distance-based, with no Queensland-style 50-cent flat fare), but services aren't frequent. Taxis and rideshare operate in town. For the hinterland, a hire car or a guided day tour is the practical way to reach Bangalow, Nimbin, the waterfalls and the markets.
Driving & parking
If you drive, note that parking in central Byron is limited, metered and busy, especially in peak season and around the beaches — arrive early, be patient, and consider parking once and walking. Roads to the hinterland are scenic but can be narrow and winding, so allow extra time. The drive from Brisbane (about 2 hours) or the Gold Coast (about 50 minutes) down the Pacific Motorway is straightforward and easy.
Getting around: your questions
The closest is Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (BNK), about 30 minutes south, with direct flights to Sydney and Melbourne (Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin). Many travellers instead use the larger Gold Coast Airport (OOL) at Coolangatta, around 45–60 minutes north, which has far more flights including some international. Brisbane Airport (BNE) is about 2–2.5 hours by road.
No — there is no passenger train to Byron Bay; the old rail line closed years ago. You reach Byron by air (via Ballina or Gold Coast airports), by coach, by shuttle or by car. Within town, the short heritage Byron Bay Train — the world's first solar-powered train — runs a fun three-minute hop between the town centre and the North Beach precinct, but it's a novelty rather than real transport.
Not for the town itself — central Byron is compact and easily walked or cycled, and the beaches and lighthouse walk are close. But a car is very useful for the hinterland — Bangalow, Nimbin, the waterfalls and the markets are spread out and poorly served by public transport. Many visitors go car-free in town and join a guided day tour for the hinterland instead.
Yes. Byron is in New South Wales, so local and regional buses use the Opal ticketing system (tap on with an Opal card or a contactless bank card). Note that NSW does not have Queensland's flat 50-cent fare — Opal fares are distance-based. Regional bus services around Byron, Ballina and the hinterland are useful but not frequent, so check timetables.
From both Ballina (BNK) and the Gold Coast (OOL), the easiest options are a pre-booked door-to-door shuttle, a rideshare or taxi, or a hire car.
