The Region

A region shaped by an ancient volcano

The Northern Rivers — from Tweed Heads on the Queensland border south to Ballina, and inland to Lismore — is one of Australia's most distinctive corners. Subtropical climate, World Heritage rainforest, heritage villages, and a craft food-and-drink scene that punches well above its weight.

From rainforest to railway, from village to cellar door

Geologically, the whole region was shaped by the 23-million-year-old Wollumbin shield volcano — which left behind impossibly fertile red soils, dramatic ranges, World Heritage Gondwana rainforests and a cluster of preserved heritage villages.

Our Northern Rivers tours are all small-group, locally-guided, and designed for travellers based on the Gold Coast or in Brisbane. Three flagship tours sit in the Northern Rivers URL — Hinterland & Villages, the Rail Trail, and the Luxury Cellar Door day — paired with three companion tours across at Byron Bay (the coastal sub-region of the Northern Rivers). Together they form a complete picture of the region.

Sub-Regions

The three main areas of the Northern Rivers

Each with its own character. Most tours focus on one — combination and private tours can cover all three.

The Byron hinterland The Hinterland

Inland Hinterland

The rolling green country between Byron and the Tweed Range. Heritage villages (Bangalow, Newrybar, Federal, Clunes, Mullumbimby, Nimbin), Gondwana rainforests of Nightcap National Park, and the region's best waterfalls including the upgraded Minyon Falls.

Tweed Valley and Rail Trail The Tweed Valley

Tweed Valley & Rail Trail

Dairy country and former sugar cane fields, anchored by Murwillumbah and the start of the 132km Northern Rivers Rail Trail. Heritage railway bridges, the 524m Burringbar Tunnel, plus Husk Farm Distillery and Stone & Wood's Murwillumbah brewery.

Byron Bay coastal The Coast

Byron Bay & the Coast

The coastal anchor of the region. Cape Byron Lighthouse, Australia's most easterly mainland point, the iconic surf breaks at The Pass, and the heritage coastal villages of Brunswick Heads, Lennox Head and Mullumbimby in the back hills.

Common Questions

Northern Rivers tour FAQs

The questions we hear most often from people planning their first Northern Rivers visit.

Start with what you're most drawn to. If it's coast and lighthouse — the Byron Bay Highlights tour is the entry point. If it's heritage villages and rainforest waterfalls — Hinterland & Villages. If it's craft producers and cellar doors — Food & Farm Trail or the Luxury Cellar Door & Rail Trail. If it's active cycling — the Rail Trail tours. Many guests combine two tours across a long weekend; the regional pillar page sets out the suggested itineraries.
The Northern Rivers is the far-north-eastern corner of New South Wales, stretching roughly from Tweed Heads on the Queensland border south to Ballina, and inland through Lismore. From Brisbane it's a 1.5–3 hour drive south; from the Gold Coast a 30 minute to 2 hour drive south. The whole region is geologically shaped by the 23-million-year-old Wollumbin (Mt Warning) shield volcano.
Yes — every Northern Rivers day tour includes hotel pickup from the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Gold Coast Airport) and most include Brisbane pickup as a paid extension. Self-drive guests who'd like to meet at the trailhead or a hinterland village can arrange this at booking. Multi-day private tours can pick up directly from Brisbane Airport or your accommodation anywhere on the east coast.
Yes, and many guests do. Byron Bay is part of the Northern Rivers region and the most common combination is a 2–3 day package: a Byron Bay Highlights day on the coast (lighthouse, beaches), a Hinterland & Villages day inland (rainforest, waterfalls, heritage villages), and optionally a Food & Farm Trail or Cellar Door day. Our regional pillar page sets out the full suggested itineraries.
Both involve cycling the Northern Rivers Rail Trail on premium e-bikes. The standard Rail Trail tour focuses on the cycling itself — the historic 524m Burringbar Tunnel, heritage stations, the rolling Tweed Valley country — with a casual lunch and self-paced exploration. The Cellar Door Luxury tour pairs the same cycling experience with afternoon tastings at the region's craft distilleries (Brookie's Gin, Husk Rum) and breweries (Stone & Wood), plus a hatted long lunch. Standard from $119, Luxury from $345.
The Northern Rivers is genuinely year-round. June–November is whale season at Cape Byron. March–May offers mild weather, fewer crowds and the Byron Bay Bluesfest at Easter. Bluesfest, Splendour in the Grass, the Byron Writers Festival and Nimbin's MardiGrass all draw visitors at specific times. Summer (Dec–Feb) is peak beach season and humidity. Spring (Sep–Nov) is arguably the best all-rounder — wildflowers in the hinterland, whales returning south with calves, perfect swimming temperatures.
