🌊 Sydney Guide 10 Featured Beaches Updated June 2026

Best Beaches Sydney

Two beach regions, more than 100 individual beaches, a different character at every cove. From iconic Bondi to the quiet sweep of Palm Beach — Cooee's editorial guide to Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and Northern Beaches, with the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk mapped out and East Coast multi-day tour options at the end.

Sydney's beaches are the city's true treasure — more than the Opera House, more than the Harbour Bridge, more than any single attraction. Greater Sydney has over 100 individual beaches stretching from Royal National Park in the south to Palm Beach in the north, and they cluster into two distinct regions that have very different personalities. Picking which region to base yourself near is the first major decision for any visitor planning a Sydney beach trip.

The Eastern Suburbs beaches (Bondi south to Maroubra) are the famous ones — dense, urban, with restaurants and bars on the doorstep and the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk threading through them. The Northern Beaches (Manly north to Palm Beach) are quieter, leafier, more spread out, and feel like a coastal escape from the city. Most visitors who only have a few days choose one or the other; longer stays let you experience both.

If you're planning a longer East Coast trip that includes Sydney, Cooee's multi-day East Coast tours all include multiple nights in Sydney with time built in for the beaches.

Sydney's Eastern Suburbs Beaches

Dense, urban, with cafe scenes on the doorstep and the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk linking five of the beaches below. The Eastern Suburbs are where most first-time visitors stay.

Eastern Suburbs · Bondi to Maroubra

Six beaches over roughly 8km of coastline, all accessible by bus from the Sydney CBD. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk connects five of them in a 6km clifftop path that's one of Sydney's must-do experiences.

1 Eastern Suburbs Bondi Beach golden sand crescent with breaking waves and surfers

Bondi Beach

The icon · 1km crescent · Bus 333 from CBD

Sydney's most famous beach and one of the most recognisable beaches in the world. A 1km arc of golden sand backed by the Bondi Pavilion and a strip of cafes, bars and surf shops along Campbell Parade. Bondi is busy, glamorous, and unmissable — come for the people-watching, the iconic Icebergs ocean pool at the south end, and the start of the Bondi to Coogee walk.

Best for: first-time visitors, brunch culture, sunset drinks, the Bondi Icebergs pool experience.

2 Eastern Suburbs Tamarama Beach small cove with cliffs on both sides

Tamarama Beach

'Glamarama' · Small cove · 800m south of Bondi

A tiny intimate cove between Bondi and Bronte, nicknamed 'Glamarama' for the model-spotting potential in summer. Tamarama is smaller, more dramatic, and significantly less crowded than Bondi, with rocky headlands on both sides creating a sheltered feel. The water can have strong rips — only swim between the flags when patrolled. The Bondi to Coogee walk passes directly through.

Best for: photography, escape from Bondi crowds, intimate beach atmosphere.

Bronte Beach

Family-friendly · Famous ocean pool · 1.5km south of Bondi

Often cited as the locals' favourite Eastern Suburbs beach. Bronte combines a protected swimming area, an iconic ocean rock pool at the southern end, a substantial grass park behind the beach for picnics, and a row of excellent cafes within walking distance. The Bronte rock pool is one of the best places in Sydney for less-confident swimmers and children. Less crowded than Bondi, still close enough to walk the coastal path.

Best for: families, picnic culture, ocean pool swimming, coastal walking.

Coogee Beach

Sweeping bay · Less crowded · End of the coastal walk

The southern terminus of the Bondi to Coogee walk and one of Sydney's most relaxed beaches. Coogee has a wide protected bay, multiple ocean pools (Wylie's Baths and McIver's Ladies Baths to the south, Giles Baths to the north), a vibrant beachside village with cafes and pubs, and notably less of the international tourist density of Bondi. Excellent for families and travellers who want a beach feel without the crowds.

Best for: longer beach stays, families, ocean pool culture, pub dinners at the Coogee Bay Hotel.

5 Eastern Suburbs Maroubra Beach long sand stretch with surfing conditions

Maroubra Beach

The surf beach · Long sand · 1km south of Coogee

Sydney's serious surf beach. Maroubra is a long stretch of sand exposed to consistent ocean swell, with a strong local surfing community, multiple surf schools for visitors, and a different feel from the more tourist-driven Eastern Suburbs beaches further north. The southern end has the protected Mahon Pool ocean rock pool. Mostly a beach for surfers and locals; visitors find it more authentic Sydney coastal life.

Best for: surfers, surf lessons, escaping tourist crowds, authentic local beach atmosphere.

6 Eastern Suburbs Watsons Bay calm harbour beach with city skyline

Watsons Bay / Camp Cove

Harbour beach · Ferry-accessible · East of CBD

Sydney's classic harbour beach experience — not ocean-facing like the others on this list, but located at the entrance to Sydney Harbour with views back across the water to the CBD skyline and Harbour Bridge. Camp Cove and the smaller Lady Bay nearby offer calm protected swimming with no ocean swell. Doyles Seafood Restaurant has been at Watsons Bay since 1885 and is a Sydney institution. Best combined with the South Head clifftop walk.

Best for: harbour swimming, seafood lunch, walking, city skyline photography, ferry day-trip from Circular Quay.

The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk

Sydney's most famous beach walk — approximately 6km along clifftops connecting Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee. Stunning ocean views, accessible cliff path, multiple swimming stops en route, and several cafe pit-stops. Allow 2-3 hours one-way. Can be walked in either direction; many do it Bondi to Coogee in the morning and bus back. One of the world's great urban coastal walks.

Region Two

Sydney's Northern Beaches

Quieter, leafier, more spread out — the Northern Beaches feel like a coastal escape from the city. Access requires either the iconic Manly ferry or driving up Pittwater Road from the CBD.

Northern Beaches · Manly to Palm Beach

Approximately 35km of coastline north of Sydney Harbour, with dozens of individual beaches separated by headlands. Manly is the southern anchor (accessed by ferry from Circular Quay); Palm Beach is the famous northern terminus 1hr 15min from the CBD.

7 Northern Beaches Manly Beach long sandy stretch with The Corso pedestrian street

Manly Beach

Northern Beaches gateway · Ferry from Circular Quay

Sydney's northside flagship and the entry point to the Northern Beaches. The 30-minute ferry crossing from Circular Quay is one of the great ferry rides in the world — harbour views, Opera House from the water, and ocean access at the other end. Manly has a long sandy beachfront, the pedestrian-only Corso connecting harbour to ocean, a strong surf school scene, and a more relaxed coastal-village feel than Bondi.

Best for: first-time visitors who want the ferry experience, families, surf lessons, day-trips from the CBD.

8 Northern Beaches Curl Curl beach with rock pool and dramatic headland

Curl Curl & Dee Why

Mid-Northern Beaches · Surf reliable · Locals' favourites

Two adjacent beaches that locals love and visitors rarely reach. Curl Curl is a long uncrowded stretch with reliable surf, a famous ocean rock pool at North Curl Curl, and a quieter atmosphere than Manly. Dee Why directly north has more amenities (cafes, surf clubs) and an excellent beachside walk. Both are accessible by bus from Manly or the B-Line from the CBD. Recommend a half-day to explore both with a swim and a coffee.

Best for: escaping Manly crowds, reliable surf, rock pool swimming, authentic Northern Beaches feel.

9 Northern Beaches Narrabeen Beach with calm sheltered lagoon area

Narrabeen & Avalon

Mid-northern · Lagoon swimming · Quieter holiday feel

Narrabeen has both an ocean beach and a protected lagoon — the lagoon is excellent for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and family-friendly calm water. Further north, Avalon has a smaller crescent beach, a low-rise village atmosphere, and the iconic Avalon Beach Surf Lifesaving Club at the southern end. These beaches feel further from the city — not necessarily distance-wise (40 mins from CBD), but in atmosphere.

Best for: lagoon water sports, families with young children, longer beach holidays, getting away from urban Sydney.

10 Northern Beaches Palm Beach with Barrenjoey Lighthouse on headland in distance

Palm Beach

'Summer Bay' · Northern terminus · 1hr 15min from CBD

The famous northern endpoint of Sydney's Northern Beaches. Palm Beach is a long arc of golden sand with the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse rising from the headland at the northern end. It's been the filming location for the long-running Australian TV soap 'Home and Away' since 1988 (representing fictional Summer Bay), and dedicated fans make pilgrimages here. The beach itself is one of Sydney's most beautiful regardless. The Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk is short but climbs to a spectacular lookout point.

Best for: day-trips from the CBD, lighthouse walks, photography, Home and Away fans, day's escape from the city.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

What visitors ask most often about Sydney's beach regions.

Sydney has two major beach regions on opposite sides of the harbour: the Eastern Suburbs beaches (south of the harbour) including Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee and Maroubra; and the Northern Beaches (north of the harbour) stretching from Manly up to Palm Beach via Curl Curl, Dee Why, Narrabeen, Newport, Avalon and Whale Beach. The two regions are quite different in character: Eastern beaches are denser, more urban, with restaurant scenes; Northern Beaches are more spread out, leafier, and feel more like a coastal escape from the city.

Most popular Sydney beaches are patrolled by Surf Life Saving NSW during summer (October to April), with red-and-yellow flagged swimming zones marking the safest spots. Always swim between the flags. Beaches with rip currents include Bondi, Maroubra, North Curl Curl and others — even strong swimmers can be caught out. Several Sydney beaches also have safer ocean rock pools attached (Bronte, Bondi's Icebergs pool, Coogee's Wylie's Baths and McIver's Ladies Baths, Mahon Pool at Maroubra) which are excellent for less confident swimmers.

Maroubra is Sydney's premier serious surf beach — exposed swell, consistent breaks, a strong local surfing community. Manly is the most beginner-friendly with surf schools, gentle southern end waves, and easy board hire from main beach businesses. Curl Curl and Dee Why on the Northern Beaches are intermediate beaches with reliable waves. Bondi has surf but is often crowded with both swimmers and surfers — south Bondi has the best breaks. Palm Beach's surf is gentler and great for learners on calm days.

Bronte and Coogee are widely considered the best Eastern Suburbs beaches for families — both have shallow protected swimming zones, ocean rock pools for younger children, plenty of grass for picnics, and good cafes within walking distance. On the Northern Beaches, Balmoral (Mosman, harbourside) and the lagoon-protected Narrabeen are family favourites. Manly works well for families wanting more activity options (kayak hire, ferry rides, dining). Palm Beach is beautiful but more remote; check tide and surf conditions if visiting with small children.

Eastern beaches are accessed by bus from the CBD: route 333 to Bondi (express), 380 to Bondi (all stops via Watson's Bay area), 372 to Coogee, 373/374 to Coogee via Maroubra. Bondi Junction train station is the closest rail to Bondi (then bus or 25-min walk). Northern Beaches require either a ferry to Manly from Circular Quay (the most scenic option) then bus connections northward, or the B-Line bus from Wynyard north toward Mona Vale. Palm Beach is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from the CBD by road.

Both are Sydney's flagship beaches but with quite different personalities. Bondi is denser, more international, faster-paced — the food scene is excellent, the people-watching is unmatched, and the beach itself is iconic but very crowded in peak season. Manly feels more like a relaxed coastal village — accessed by ferry across the harbour (a 30-minute scenic crossing in itself), with a longer beachfront, a quieter atmosphere, and a pedestrian shopping district known as 'The Corso' connecting harbour to beach. First-time Sydney visitors often visit both.

Yes — Palm Beach in Sydney's far north has served as the filming location for the long-running Australian TV soap 'Home and Away' since 1988, where it represents the fictional town of Summer Bay. Specific landmarks from the show including the Palm Beach Surf Club and the famous lighthouse on the Barrenjoey headland are recognisable to viewers. Filming continues year-round and visitors occasionally spot the cast working. The beach itself is one of Sydney's most beautiful regardless of TV associations.

Peak beach season is December to February (Australian summer) when water temperatures reach 22-24°C and air temperatures are 25-30°C. March to May (autumn) is excellent with warm water (still 20-22°C in March), fewer crowds, and milder air. September to November (spring) offers warming conditions and surf is often best. June to August (winter) is cooler — water 16-18°C — but Sydney beaches remain spectacular for walks, surfers wear wetsuits, and the famous Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is comfortable any time of year.

The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is Sydney's most famous — approximately 6km along clifftops connecting Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Coogee with stunning ocean views, accessible cliff path, and several swimming stops en route. Allow 2-3 hours. The Manly to Spit Bridge walk (10km) is the Northern Beaches equivalent, winding through bushland and small coves. The Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk at Palm Beach is shorter but climbs to a spectacular lookout. The Manly to Shelly Beach walk is a quick 30-minute easy option for first-time visitors.
