Few big cities put the beach so close to the centre. Sydney has more than a hundred harbour and ocean beaches, from the surf and buzz of Bondi to the ferry-served sands of Manly and the tranquil coves of the Northern Beaches. Whether you want to surf, swim laps in an ocean pool, walk the clifftops or just laze on the sand, here's how to find your perfect stretch.
Bondi & the coastal walk
Bondi is the icon — a wide, patrolled surf beach a short ride east of the city, with the famous Bondi Icebergs ocean pool at its southern tip. From there, the Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk (about 6 km) traces the clifftops past Tamarama, Bronte, Clovelly and Gordons Bay — one of Sydney's great free experiences, with beaches and ocean pools to cool off in along the way. This stretch is the beating heart of Sydney beach culture.
Manly & the ferry beaches
Manly is a Sydney classic — reached by a scenic ferry ride from Circular Quay, with an ocean surf beach on one side and a calm harbour beach on the other, linked by the palm-lined Corso. Walk around Cabbage Tree Bay to sheltered Shelly Beach, or pick up part of the Manly Scenic Walkway. The ferry there and back is half the fun, making Manly one of the easiest and most rewarding beach days in the city.
Palm Beach & "Summer Bay"
North of Manly, a string of gorgeous beaches runs up the peninsula to Palm Beach — the real-life "Summer Bay" of Home and Away. About an hour from the city, it's a beautiful, laid-back spot with the Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk at its tip and views over Pittwater. It's a favourite day trip, especially for fans of the show, and appears on several of our tours.
Sydney's beaches: your questions
Bondi is the most famous — a broad, patrolled surf beach about 7 km east of the city, with the Bondi Icebergs ocean pool at its southern end. For a quieter, family-friendly feel, Manly pairs ocean surf with a scenic ferry ride. Others love Coogee, Bronte and Palm Beach. The "best" depends on whether you want surf, calm swimming, atmosphere or a ferry adventure.
It's Sydney's most loved coastal walk — a roughly 6 km, two-hour clifftop path from Bondi south to Coogee, passing Tamarama, Bronte, the Waverley Cemetery, Clovelly and Gordons Bay. It's free, spectacular and dotted with beaches and ocean pools to swim along the way. Wear sun protection and good shoes, and go early on hot days.
The best way is the Manly ferry (F1) from Circular Quay — a scenic ~30-minute ride across the harbour, tapped on with Opal or contactless. A faster private fast ferry also runs. At Manly, the ocean beach and harbour beach are linked by The Corso, and the short walk to Shelly Beach through Cabbage Tree Bay is lovely.

It's a beautiful, upmarket beach about an hour from the city, with the Barrenjoey Lighthouse walk at its northern headland. It's a popular day trip and features on some of our tours.
Sydney's patrolled beaches are safe when you swim between the red-and-yellow flags, where surf lifesavers and lifeguards watch for rips and hazards. Many beaches also have sheltered ocean pools ideal for calmer swimming. Always check conditions, heed signage, and don't swim at unpatrolled beaches or outside the flags.
