Sydney events & festivals 2026
Sydney's calendar is one of the busiest in the country — a year-round run of light festivals, harbour fireworks, cultural celebrations and world-class sport. Below are the 2026 highlights by season, so you can time your visit with (or around) the big ones. Dates can change, so always confirm on the official event websites before you book.
Sydney Festival, Mardi Gras & the Easter Show
Sydney Festival fills January with theatre, music and art across the city. In late February, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras reaches its peak with the famous parade (28 February 2026) along Oxford Street. Come April, the Sydney Royal Easter Show (2–13 April) brings the country to the city at Sydney Olympic Park — a huge, family-friendly agricultural fair with rides, animals and showbags.
Vivid Sydney & City2Surf
The winter highlight is Vivid Sydney (22 May–13 June) — the harbour and city landmarks transformed by light, projections and music after dark, alongside a program of music and ideas. It's largely free and utterly spectacular. In August, the City2Surf fun run (9 August 2026) sends tens of thousands from the CBD to Bondi. Winter is also whale-watching season, making it a rewarding, quieter time to visit.
Sculpture by the Sea & New Year's Eve
In spring, Sculpture by the Sea (16 October–2 November 2026) turns the Bondi-to-Tamarama coastal walk into a free open-air gallery of large-scale artworks against the ocean — one of Sydney's loveliest free events. Then the year closes with the world-famous New Year's Eve fireworks (31 December) over the Harbour Bridge, the ultimate Sydney celebration. Both draw big crowds, so plan your viewing well ahead.

The light displays are largely free; some events, cruises and talks are ticketed. It's the biggest event on Sydney's winter calendar and well worth timing a trip around.
Sydney's world-famous fireworks light up the harbour on 31 December 2026, with a 9pm family display and the spectacular midnight show over the Harbour Bridge.
