The Sunshine Coast is one of Australia's most liveable regions β and one of its best day-trip launchpads. Within two hours of Noosa or Caloundra you've got ancient rainforests, volcanic hinterland, island wilderness, craft breweries, whale-watching hotspots and one of Queensland's greatest festivals. The tricky part? Knowing which trips are worth your time.
We've ranked these 12 day trips on five equally weighted criteria: scenery & wow-factor, accessibility, value for money, unique experience and how much there is to do. The result is an honest guide β not a press-release list.

Fraser Island (K'gari)
The world's largest sand island β and a genuine UNESCO World Heritage wonder β sits just north of the Sunshine Coast. Day trips from Hervey Bay (itself an easy 2-hour drive from Noosa) deliver 75-Mile Beach, the ethereally blue Lake McKenzie, the shipwreck of the Maheno, ancient coloured sand cliffs at The Pinnacles, and a strong chance of spotting dingoes, dolphins and migrating humpback whales (JulyβNovember).
The island has no paved roads β 4WD is king, and a guided tour is genuinely the best way to experience K'gari if you only have a day. You'll cover more ground, get expert commentary on the First Nations significance of the island, and skip the permit headaches.
Noosa Hinterland & Cooloola
Often overlooked by visitors fixated on the beach, the Noosa Hinterland is one of Southeast Queensland's great secrets. Tiny villages like Kin Kin and Pomona (don't miss the Majestic Theatre cinema, Australia's longest continually running) are surrounded by boutique farms, cheese makers, olive groves and coffee roasters. The Great Sandy National Park's Cooloola section offers wilderness canoe trails through the Noosa River β one of the most peaceful experiences on the coast.
Combine a morning at the Kin Kin Market (first Sunday of the month), lunch at a farm-to-table restaurant, a stop at the Elanda Point canoe hire, and a sunset from Teewah Coloured Sands for a perfect hinterland day.
Glass House Mountains
Eleven ancient volcanic plugs rising abruptly from the coastal plain β the Glass House Mountains are among Southeast Queensland's most iconic and photogenic landmarks. Captain Cook named them in 1770 (they reminded him of the glass houses of Yorkshire), but the Jinibara and Kabi Kabi peoples have known these peaks as family members β Tibrogargan, Beerwah, Coonowrin and their kin β for tens of thousands of years.
The best day trip combines the Wild Horse Mountain Lookout (panoramic views, easy 10-minute walk), a climb up Mt Ngungun (the most accessible summit, 1.5 hours return, rewarded with stunning 360Β° views across all eleven peaks), lunch in Maleny or Montville, and the Glass House Mountains Lookout at golden hour. Serious hikers can attempt Mt Tibrogargan β a full-on scramble with fixed chains, not for the faint-hearted.
Eumundi Markets & Village
Eumundi Markets is not just a market β it's a cultural institution. Running every Wednesday and Saturday since 1979, it's now one of Australia's largest artisan markets with over 600 stalls, 200+ live musicians and performers, and a jaw-dropping variety of handmade goods, food, jewellery and alternative health. The village itself β heritage pub, artisan chocolate shop, micro-distillery β is delightful to explore once the market quiets.
The big Saturday market draws enormous crowds (arrive before 8am for the best stall selection), while the Wednesday market offers a more relaxed, local atmosphere. Either way, budget at least three hours β the temptation to linger is strong.
Australia Zoo, Beerwah
Steve Irwin's legacy zoo β now run by Terri Irwin and the family β is one of Australia's great wildlife experiences and genuinely one of the best zoos in the country. Over 1,200 animals across 100 acres, with the famous Crocoseum shows, gorgeous lemurs, sun bears, rhinos, Africa-savannah exhibits and the most enthusiastic team of zookeepers you'll ever meet. The passion is infectious.
Budget a full day β there's more here than you'd expect. The Wildlife Warriors experiences (hand-feeding crocs, behind-the-scenes tours) are worth pre-booking. The zoo is large enough that you'll comfortably fill 6β7 hours.
Montville & Maleny
Perched 400 metres up on the Blackall Range, Montville and Maleny are the Sunshine Coast's answer to the Blue Mountains β arty villages draped in cooler air with sweeping views down to the Glasshouse Mountains and Glass House plains. Montville specialises in galleries, chocolatiers, homewares and devonshire tea; Maleny has more of an edge β the farmers market, Maleny Botanic Gardens, Mary Cairncross Reserve and the kind of independent bookshop you want to spend a rainy afternoon in.
The two villages are just 15 minutes apart on Maleny-Montville Road, making this a natural pairing β great for a couple who can't agree between boutique shopping and hiking.
Noosa Everglades
One of only two everglades systems in the world (the other is in Florida), the Noosa Everglades is a slow, mirror-still waterway system of extraordinary beauty. The tea-tree tannins stain the water deep amber-brown; the tea-trees arch overhead creating tunnels of light and reflection; the only sound is birdsong and the occasional splash of a platypus or turtle.
Day tours depart from Noosa Heads and typically combine a kayak or canoe journey through the everglades with lunch at a wilderness camp, a swim at Lake Cootharaba and commentary on the unique ecology. A genuinely special experience that visitors to Noosa often rate as the highlight of their entire trip.
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
A 55-hectare pocket of subtropical rainforest overlooking the Glass House Mountains β one of the most picturesque views in Queensland. The Discovery Centre is excellent, the walking trails are easy and shaded, and the resident pademelon population is incredibly tame (you'll have one at your feet within minutes). Best combined with lunch in Maleny village β it's just 2km down the road.
Bribie Island
Queensland's most accessible island β connected by bridge β Bribie offers a quieter, less-visited alternative to the famous islands further north. The southern end has calm, shallow beaches perfect for families; the northern end (4WD only) is wild and largely deserted. The Pumicestone Passage between Bribie and the mainland is a marine park nursery teeming with marine life and excellent for kayaking.
Gympie & Mary Valley Rattler
Gympie is an old Queensland gold-rush town with genuine heritage character, a terrific Gold Mining Museum and the Mary Valley Rattler β a restored steam train that runs along one of Queensland's most scenic valley routes. The Gympie Music Muster (Australia's largest outdoor country music festival, held in August) is a completely different experience β loud, proud and quintessentially Queensland.
Kondalilla Falls & Mapleton
Kondalilla Falls National Park is home to one of the Blackall Range's most dramatic waterfalls β a 90-metre cascade into a rock pool that offers a cold, refreshing plunge on a hot day. The gorge walk (5km, 2.5 hrs return) is beautiful. The nearby village of Mapleton has a beloved bakery, a pub with Range views, and a general store that feels like 1975 in the best possible way.
Fraser Coast & Maryborough
Maryborough is the birthplace of P.L. Travers (Mary Poppins author) and one of Queensland's most intact 19th-century heritage towns. Hervey Bay is Australia's whale-watching capital (JulyβNovember) β the humpbacks rest in the sheltered bay on their migration south, sometimes approaching boats within metres. The distance from Noosa makes this a stretch as a day trip, but whale season makes it worth it.
