Staying on the Sunshine Coast for a few days? You're positioned at the centre of one of Australia's richest day-trip regions. K'gari to the north, the Glass House Mountains to the south, Noosa Everglades through the middle, and Brisbane an easy drive when city culture calls. Here's how to make every day count.
See All Day Trips Weekly PlannerThe Sunshine Coast sits at an extraordinary geographic crossroads. To the north, Fraser Island (K'gari) and the Cooloola Coast are among Australia's great wilderness areas. To the south, the Glass House Mountains, Australia Zoo, Brisbane, and eventually the Gold Coast. Within the region itself, the Noosa Everglades are one of the world's two everglades systems, the Blackall Range hinterland takes 20 minutes to reach, and the whale migration runs directly past the coast from June to October. No other base in Southeast Queensland gives you this range within a single day's drive.
Rainbow Beach (1.5hrs), K'gari Fraser Island (2.5hrs via ferry), Cooloola National Park. Wild, remote, and genuinely extraordinary.
Australia Zoo (45min), Glass House Mountains (60min), Moreton Island (2hrs to ferry), Brisbane city (90min), Natural Bridge (2hrs).
Noosa Everglades kayaking, Blackall Range hinterland, Eumundi Markets (Wed/Sat), Kondalilla Falls, Maleny, and the coast's full range of beaches.
The coastline north of Noosa transitions quickly from resort town to one of Australia's most remarkable wilderness areas — the Great Sandy Region, Cooloola National Park, Rainbow Beach, and ultimately K'gari (Fraser Island), the world's largest sand island. These are the day trips most Sunshine Coast visitors never attempt, and they're the ones most likely to be remembered.
K'gari — renamed from Fraser Island in recognition of its Butchulla Traditional Owners — is 122km long, 98% national park, and accessible only by barge or aircraft. The world's largest sand island contains rainforest growing out of sand, freshwater perched lakes of extraordinary clarity (Lake McKenzie is the most famous), ancient dingo populations, the Maheno shipwreck on the beach, and an ecosystem of global significance.
From the Sunshine Coast, the practical route is to drive north to Rainbow Beach (1.5-2hrs from Noosa), then take the Manta Ray barge to K'gari's southern tip at Hook Point. The island requires a 4WD vehicle and a permit. A full day with an experienced guide covers Lake McKenzie, the Maheno wreck, the Pinnacles sand cliffs, and Eli Creek.
Rainbow Beach is one of Queensland's most dramatically beautiful and least-visited coastal communities — a small town perched above 70-metre coloured sand cliffs that give the beach its name. The cliffs contain 72 distinct colours of sand. The beach below is wild, uncrowded, and backed by Cooloola National Park. The lookout at Carlo Sand Blow is one of the region's finest free panoramas. Tin Can Bay, 15 minutes south, has a morning dolphin feeding program.
The Noosa Everglades is one of only two everglades systems on the planet — the other being in Florida. The upper Noosa River system passes through a remarkable network of lakes, rivers, and waterways hosting jabiru storks, sea eagles, azure kingfishers, and the endangered ground parrot. The silence of the upper river is absolute and the tea-tree-stained water takes on extraordinary orange-gold hues in late afternoon light.
The Bruce Highway south passes through the Glass House Mountains, Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo, and eventually Brisbane's world-class cultural institutions. All are accessible as day trips from any Sunshine Coast base, and several work with our guided tour pickup from your accommodation.
600+ animals on 100 acres — cheetahs, giraffes, rhinoceros, Sumatran tigers, the legendary crocodile shows, and the Wildlife Hospital. A full day. Our guided tour picks up from SC hotels with zoo entry included.
Guided Tour — from $179Eleven volcanic plugs — 26 million years old — rising from the flat coastal plain. The geological story, Kabi Kabi cultural significance, and the walking tracks are extraordinary. Our guided tour picks up from Sunshine Coast hotels.
Guided Tour — from $149GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art, free entry), South Bank Parklands, Howard Smith Wharves, Fortitude Valley street art, and the Story Bridge walk. The M1 south is clear by mid-morning — leave by 9am for a full city day.
Brisbane Activities GuideWild dolphin feeding at dusk, Tangalooma Wrecks snorkelling, desert sandboarding, and freshwater spring lakes. The drive plus ferry makes this a long day from the Sunshine Coast, but for a week-long stay, unmissable.
Moreton Island Tour DetailsThe Natural Bridge glow-worm cave in Springbrook National Park — a basalt arch above a waterfall with an extraordinary glow-worm light show at dusk. The 1km rainforest loop adds ancient Antarctic beech trees and a landscape that feels nothing like coastal Queensland.
Gold Coast Hinterland TourFrom June through October, humpback whales migrate north in enormous numbers. Mooloolaba is the Sunshine Coast's whale watching hub with high encounter rates during peak season (July-September). Book a morning departure for calmest conditions.
SC Activities GuideNot every day needs to leave the region. The Sunshine Coast's immediate surrounds contain day-trip experiences of extraordinary quality that most visitors overlook in favour of longer-distance destinations.
600+ stalls on Saturdays, ~300 on Wednesdays. Artisan food, handmade goods, live music, and a community character built over 45 years. The classic SC day: Eumundi at 8:30am followed by Noosa in the afternoon.
Include Eumundi on Our TourKondalilla Falls walk (2.7km return, 90m cascade), Montville village, Maleny Dairies, and Mapleton Falls lookout. A completely different Queensland to the coast, 30 minutes away.
See 3-Day ItineraryBoutique winery cellar doors in the Blackall Range — Flaxton Gardens, Flame Hill Vineyard, and selected seasonal producers. Our wine tours pick up from Sunshine Coast accommodation.
Wine Tour — from $189For visitors based in Noosa, Mooloolaba is a completely different coastal character worth a dedicated day. The esplanade, SEA LIFE aquarium, and dolphin cruises on the Mooloolah River are all excellent.
SC Activities GuideExtraordinary flat-water paddling past mangroves and across Lake Cootharaba. Dolphins common. In whale season (June-October), whale song is audible underwater in the open lake sections.
More SC ActivitiesThe HMAS Brisbane — a former Royal Australian Navy destroyer deliberately sunk in 2005 — is one of Queensland's finest dive sites. 110m long, at 28m depth, with significant marine life colonisation of the hull.

If you're staying on the Sunshine Coast for 5-7 days, here's how a local guide would build the week.
Arrive and settle in. Afternoon walk on Noosa Main Beach. Dinner on Hastings Street. Evening walk along the Noosa River spit at sunset.
The classic Sunshine Coast day — Eumundi at 8:30am, Noosa National Park coastal walk with koalas at 10:30am, Hastings Street lunch, Montville afternoon. Book our Classic or Gourmet Tour.
Depart early for Australia Zoo (45min south). Full day with 600+ animals and the Wildlife Hospital. On the return, stop at the Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive for the late afternoon light. Our guided tour picks up from your SC hotel.
Kondalilla Falls walk, lunch at Flaxton Gardens, Maleny Dairies, and a cellar door tasting at Flame Hill Vineyard. Our Wine Tour picks up from your SC hotel.
Noosa Everglades kayaking (depart Boreen Point by 8am for best conditions) if you want wilderness; Mooloolaba beach day with a dolphin cruise if you want a different coastal character. Both within 45 minutes of Noosa.
Rainbow Beach (1.5-2hrs north) for wild sand cliffs and the Cooloola Coast. Or Brisbane city (1.5-2hrs south) for GOMA, Howard Smith Wharves, and the Story Bridge walk. Both work as full day trips with an early start.
Last swim at Noosa Main Beach or Tea Tree Bay. Final coffee on Hastings Street. Leave for Brisbane Airport (1.5-2hrs).
Some day trips are genuinely seasonal — whale watching only runs June-October; K'gari's beach driving is safest in the dry season; the Everglades is most atmospheric in winter.
Rainbow Beach and K'gari require 7am departures from Noosa to make the most of the day. The Manta Ray barge to K'gari runs on a tide-dependent schedule — check the timetable the night before. K'gari requires the earliest possible start.
The Blackall Range is 5-8Β°C cooler than the coast and receives significantly more rainfall. Check the Nambour weather (closest town to the range) rather than the Noosa coastal forecast — they're often completely different.
Public transport severely limits Sunshine Coast day tripping. A hire car from Noosa, Maroochydore, or Caloundra airport costs $60-90/day and opens every destination on this page. For Australia Zoo and Glass House Mountains, our guided tours with SC pickup remove the need for a car on those days.
If you're visiting during whale season, book on your first day in Noosa regardless of when you plan to go. Mooloolaba operators fill up fast in July and August. Early morning departures have the calmest sea conditions and highest encounter rates.
Queensland sun is intense year-round. SPF 50+ sunscreen, a hat, and a refillable water bottle are required for every day trip on this list. K'gari is particularly exposed — no shade on much of the eastern beach, and the sand reflects heat upward even on overcast days.
Mobile coverage drops significantly north of Noosa. K'gari has essentially no mobile coverage. Download Google Maps offline for the Rainbow Beach and K'gari routes before leaving Noosa. The Queensland National Parks app has offline track maps for Everglades, Cooloola, and K'gari.
"We spent 7 nights based in Noosa and did a different day trip every day. Australia Zoo with the Cooee guided tour (incredible — the guide made it genuinely educational), then Glass House Mountains, then Eumundi Markets, then Rainbow Beach. The Noosa Everglades kayak day was the most peaceful thing I've ever done in my life. The best holiday base we've ever had."
"The wine tour was the day I didn't know I needed. We'd done Noosa three times and thought we'd seen it all. Our guide took us up into the Blackall Range to three wineries, a cheese producer in Maleny, and a lookout where the Glass House Mountains filled the entire horizon at 4pm in golden light. The Sunshine Coast is so much bigger than Noosa."
"We drove to Rainbow Beach independently. The coloured sand cliffs are genuinely extraordinary — nothing prepares you for them. We could see K'gari across the water and immediately booked a day on the island for the next day. Rainbow Beach might be the most beautiful place in Queensland that no one talks about."
Whether you're based in Noosa for a week or passing through for a long weekend, the Sunshine Coast region rewards every day you give it. Our guided tours include Sunshine Coast hotel pickup.
