Rainforest, villages & waterfalls
Thirty minutes inland from the beaches, the Sunshine Coast hinterland is a different world — the Blackall Range rising into cool subtropical rainforest, mountain villages, and waterfalls with swimming holes at their base. It's where the coast comes to slow down: browsing galleries in Montville, farm-gate cheese around Maleny, and long views across the Glass House Mountains. This guide ties the whole range together.
The mountain villages
Montville is the postcard village — heritage-style buildings full of galleries, boutiques and handmade fudge and chocolate, with cafes that look out to the coast. A short drive south, Maleny has a more agricultural soul: a cooperative community, farm-gate produce, the historic Maleny Dairies and Cheese Factory, and the gateway to Mary Cairncross reserve. Waterfalls & walks
The range is laced with rainforest walks. Kondalilla Falls is the star — a 90-metre cascade with a rock pool and a rainforest circuit through piccabeen palms. Gardners Falls near Maleny is the local swimming hole. And Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve offers an easy rainforest boardwalk and one of the best Glass House Mountains lookouts in the region. Further afield, the Glass House Mountains themselves anchor the southern end of the range.
Produce, cafes & hatted tables
The hinterland punches above its weight for food. It's home to two of the coast's top hatted restaurants — The Long Apron at Montville and The Tamarind at Maleny — plus farm-gate cheese, chocolate, berries and cellar doors. Absolutely — the hinterland is the perfect counterpoint to the beaches. Just half an hour inland, the Blackall Range rises into mountain villages, subtropical rainforest, waterfalls with swimming holes, and some of the coast's best cafes and hatted restaurants. Many visitors rate a hinterland day among the highlights of their trip.
Montville and Maleny are the two headline villages. Montville is the pretty, gallery-and-fudge-shop browsing town with long views to the coast; Maleny has a stronger farm-and-produce identity, the Mary Cairncross rainforest reserve and famous Glass House Mountains views. Most people visit both — they're a short, scenic drive apart.
Walk to Kondalilla Falls or cool off at Gardners Falls, browse Montville, take in the Glass House Mountains views from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, sample farm-gate produce and cheese around Maleny, and — on a Wednesday or Saturday — time it with the Eumundi Markets.
Only about 30–45 minutes' drive inland from the main beaches, climbing from sea level to around 400–450 m on the Blackall Range. That short drive brings a noticeable change — cooler air, rainforest and sweeping views — which is what makes it such an easy and rewarding day trip.
A car makes the hinterland much easier, as the villages, falls and reserves are spread along the range with limited public transport.
