Brisbane to Melbourne
14-Day East Coast Tour
Byron Bay's surf culture, Sydney Opera House at sunrise, wild dolphins at Port Stephens, Hunter Valley wine country, and the spectacular Sea Cliff Bridge along the Grand Pacific Drive — every iconic moment of the Australian East Coast in one carefully curated 14-day guided journey.
Australia's Greatest Road Journey
The East Coast, Done Properly
The Brisbane to Melbourne route is arguably the most spectacular road journey in Australia — 1,700 kilometres of coastline, rainforest hinterland, world-famous surf breaks, ancient Aboriginal culture, pristine marine reserves, and some of the country's finest wine regions. Our 14-day guided coach tour ensures you don't miss a moment of it — from the subtropical Gold Coast border down through the Pacific Highway's coastal towns, across Sydney Harbour, and along the Princes Highway through the NSW South Coast into Victoria.
While flights from Brisbane to Melbourne take just 2.5 hours, you'd miss everything that makes this stretch of Australia extraordinary. Our small-group tour — maximum 20 guests — travels in a comfortable air-conditioned coach with an experienced local guide who knows every hidden gem, every worthy detour, and every story behind every landscape.
Why This Tour is Different
This isn't a rushed checklist of tourist stops. It's a carefully paced 14-day immersion — swimming at Angourie Blue Pool, learning from the Gumbaynggirr people on Country in Orara East State Forest, meeting rescued koalas at Port Macquarie's celebrated Koala Hospital, kayaking with wild bottlenose dolphins at Port Stephens, tasting premium shiraz and semillon in Australia's oldest wine region, and arriving in Sydney for a celebratory group dinner overlooking the Harbour Bridge.
Over 60% of our travellers are solo adventurers. Our tours are designed for exactly that — intimate group dynamics, guides who make introductions effortless, and shared experiences that turn strangers into friends by Day 3. We've been running East Coast tours since 1989 — Brisbane locals with three and a half decades of expertise in showing visitors the Australia they came to see.

Day by Day
Your 14-Day Brisbane to Melbourne Itinerary
Every day brings new adventures. Here's what to expect — stops, stays, and optional extras that make each day uniquely yours. 2026 departures run Monday year-round.
Welcome to Brisbane — Tour Begins
Meet your guide and fellow travellers in downtown Brisbane for a welcome briefing. Get acquainted over dinner and prepare for the adventure ahead. Brisbane's South Bank Parklands, Story Bridge, and Kangaroo Point cliffs are worth exploring if you arrive early. Brisbane is also gearing up to host the 2032 Olympics — the city is in full transformation mode.
Brisbane → Gold Coast → Byron Bay
Travel south through the Gold Coast before crossing into New South Wales via the Tweed and continuing to Byron Bay — Cape Byron is the easternmost point of mainland Australia. Arrive in time to explore the village, walk to the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse, and settle into the beach-town atmosphere. During whale watching season (May–November), the cape is one of Australia's finest land-based humpback whale lookouts.
Byron Bay to Darlington Beach via Yamba
Stop at charming Yamba — recently rated one of the best small beach towns in Australia — and swim at Angourie Blue Pool, a spectacular natural rock pool of extraordinary turquoise beauty fed by underground springs. Continue south along the Pacific Highway and arrive at Darlington Beach Resort for a relaxed evening with complimentary beachfront activities.
Coffs Harbour & Gumbaynggirr Aboriginal Cultural Experience
A genuinely moving day. Journey into Orara East State Forest on Gumbaynggirr Country for a guided cultural experience — one of the most authentic Indigenous experiences available to visitors anywhere on the East Coast. Learn about traditional language preservation, bush medicine, traditional practices, and the ongoing connection to Country. This experience directly supports the Gumbaynggirr community's cultural revitalisation and language reclamation work.
Port Macquarie Koala Hospital → Murray's Brewery → Port Stephens
Visit the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital, a celebrated wildlife rescue centre caring for injured koalas along the mid-north coast — and one of the most photographed wildlife stops on the East Coast. Walk a section of Port Macquarie's spectacular 9km coastal walk if time permits. Then stop at Murray's Brewery near Bobs Farm for craft beer tastings before arriving at the stunning Port Stephens marine reserve on Worimi Country.
Explore Port Stephens — Tomaree Mountain & the Bay
A full day in one of the East Coast's most spectacular locations. Hike the Tomaree Mountain summit trail for breathtaking 360° coastal panoramas across Yacaaba and Cabbage Tree Island. Choose from optional activities showcasing why this bay is world-famous for marine wildlife — the Dolphin Discovery Cruise is unmissable, with wild bottlenose dolphins almost guaranteed thanks to a resident pod of around 150 in the bay. Stockton Bight is home to the largest moving sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere.
Hunter Valley Wine Tour → Arrive Sydney
One of the trip's most indulgent days. Tour Australia's oldest wine region — the Hunter Valley, established in the 1820s — visiting premium Pokolbin wineries for guided tastings of world-class semillon, shiraz, and chardonnay alongside artisan local cheese. Continue down through Wollombi Valley and arrive in Sydney for a celebratory group dinner overlooking the Harbour Bridge.
Sydney — Harbour, Bondi & Beyond
Three days to explore one of the world's great cities. Guided highlights include Sydney Harbour, the Opera House, Bondi Beach and the iconic coastal walk to Coogee, Manly Beach by ferry, the Royal Botanic Garden, and Sydney's extraordinary food scene. Evening harbour cruises, the Blue Mountains day trip (Three Sisters, Scenic World, Leura), Taronga Zoo, and the BridgeClimb are popular optional add-ons. 2026 bonus: May 22 – June 13 departures coincide with Vivid Sydney — the Southern Hemisphere's largest festival of light, music, food and ideas, with the 6.5km Light Walk transforming the harbour each evening.
Sydney South → Coastal Drive Through NSW & Into Victoria
Head south through Royal National Park — Australia's second-oldest national park — and across the iconic Sea Cliff Bridge along the Grand Pacific Drive, one of the most dramatic coastal scenes in Australia. Continue through Wollongong and the Illawarra Escarpment, with overnight stops along the NSW South Coast around the Shoalhaven region and the Sapphire Coast. Time for beach walks, oyster farms, and fresh seafood before crossing into Victoria.
Arrive Melbourne — Your East Coast Adventure Ends
Welcome to Melbourne — Australia's cultural capital. Arrive in the CBD with the afternoon free to explore the legendary laneway café culture, world-class street art on Hosier Lane, the Queen Victoria Market, and Federation Square. Your guide joins the group for a farewell dinner to celebrate 14 extraordinary days on the road. Extension options to the Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island penguins, or Mornington Peninsula available on request.

What Our Travellers Say
Real experiences from adventurers who've done the Brisbane to Melbourne journey with Cooee Tours.
The Gumbaynggirr cultural experience near Coffs Harbour was the single most meaningful thing I've ever done as a traveller. Genuinely transformative. Everything else was excellent too, but that day alone justified the whole trip.
Solo traveller, slightly nervous about joining a group. By day three I had made friends I'll have for life. The guide was extraordinary — knowledgeable, funny, and genuinely cared about everyone's experience.
Port Stephens blew our minds — the dolphin cruise was spectacular. And Hunter Valley on the way to Sydney was the perfect day. Cooee Tours have absolutely nailed the pace and balance of this itinerary.
I'd been considering the Brisbane to Melbourne drive for years and kept putting it off. This tour made it effortless — no planning, no driving stress, just pure experience. Worth every dollar.
Byron Bay to Angourie Blue Pool was a highlight I never expected. Our guide knew spots that no tourist usually sees. The small group size meant we could stop whenever something interesting appeared — loved it.
Three days in Sydney exceeded every expectation. The guide's restaurant recommendations were incredible, the harbour cruise at night was magical, and the whole 14 days just flowed perfectly. A 10/10 experience.
