The east Australian humpback whale population is the most successful marine mammal conservation story in our lifetimes. Reduced to barely a few hundred animals by the early 1960s after a century of commercial whaling, the population has rebounded under protection to more than thirty thousand whales today — and the corridor they travel along the Queensland coast every winter passes within fifteen kilometres of Mooloolaba Marina. From mid-June, pregnant females lead the northbound migration to the warm Coral Sea, calving in protected waters off the Great Barrier Reef. From August onwards, the southbound migration brings them back — mothers escorting newborn calves on slow, repeated breaches that lift the entire body clear of the water.
The peak weeks on the Sunshine Coast are roughly mid-July through late September. Cruise operators report sightings on 80-95% of operating days during peak season. What you might see varies by week and individual cruise: breaches (the whole 30-tonne body launching clear of the water and crashing down on its side), tail slaps (the massive fluke repeatedly striking the surface), pectoral fin slaps, spy hops (the whale rising vertically to look around), blow spouts visible from kilometres away, mother-and-calf escorts, occasional heat runs (males competing in fast pursuit of a single female), spinner dolphins riding the vessel's bow wave, and the more silent but unmistakable presence of forty-foot animals just beneath the surface.

Bottlenose and spinner dolphins frequently ride the cruise vessel's bow wave on transit. Sometimes a pod of 10-20 animals accompanies the boat for ten or fifteen minutes — a wildlife encounter in itself, separate from the whale sightings.

Sunshine Coast winter sea conditions are typically calmer than summer — the prevailing south-easterly winds drop and the seas settle. Vessels are large modern catamarans designed for stability. Most guests with mild motion sensitivity manage well with preventive medication. Cruises may be rescheduled in severe weather (rare in winter but possible — strong winds, high seas, lightning).
If you're prone to motion sickness, take preventive medication 30-60 minutes BEFORE boarding (not after — once symptoms start, medication is less effective). Sea bands, ginger, peppermint can supplement but are not substitutes. Pharmacy options: Travacalm, Kwells, Avomine. Consult your GP if you have other medical conditions.
Mooloolaba whale watching operators typically offer a sighting guarantee — if no whales are spotted during the cruise, you receive a complimentary return cruise ticket valid for the same season. Confirm specific terms with the Cooee booking team when reserving. The Cooee coach transfer portion is not refundable in the event of a no-sighting day; the cruise ticket replacement covers most of the value.

Read article →Mooloolaba is a coastal town at the mouth of the Mooloolah River on the Sunshine Coast, population around 11,000, with the marina sitting in the protected river inlet and the surf beach immediately east. The town is the closest major departure point on the Sunshine Coast for the offshore humpback migration corridor — generally a 30-minute steam from the marina mouth to the productive whale-watching zones in 5-15km of water. Mooloolaba Marina hosts charter fishing operations, dive operators, and during winter the dedicated whale-watching catamaran fleet.
The Sunshine Coast humpback migration is part of a recovery story unique in marine conservation. By 1962, commercial whaling on the Queensland coast had reduced the east Australian population to perhaps a few hundred whales — barely enough to maintain genetic viability. Whaling ended in Australia in 1979. Under protection since, the population has grown at roughly 10% per year and now exceeds 30,000 animals — one of the few global examples of a marine mammal population returning to pre-industrial-era abundance. The whales you'll see from a Mooloolaba cruise are the result of fifty years of recovery.
