Noosa's wild koalas and turquoise calm. Eumundi's 600-stall market institution. Hinterland villages at 450 metres above the coast. Ancient volcanic peaks rising from the plain. The Sunshine Coast has more layers than any other Queensland region β€” and the right guide reveals all of them.

Why the Sunshine Coast Needs a Guide More Than Anywhere Else

The Sunshine Coast's most extraordinary experiences are not the ones on the obvious tourist map. Noosa National Park's coastal track is free, clearly marked, and visited by thousands β€” but the people who see wild koalas from it and the people who don't are separated almost entirely by knowing which trees to look at, and when. Eumundi Markets runs every Wednesday and Saturday, but arriving at 10am on a Saturday in January is a fundamentally different experience to arriving at 8am on a Wednesday in May. The Blackall Range hinterland is 20 minutes from the coast, but without local knowledge of Kondalilla versus Mapleton versus Maleny and the drive timing that makes both work in a single day, most visitors see one of three and leave.

Our guides have been navigating the Sunshine Coast for fifteen years. The koala sighting rate on our Noosa walks. The Eumundi stall holders who've been there since 1986. The escarpment lookout in Maleny at 4pm when the Glass House Mountains catch the western sun. These things don't appear in a guidebook because they require presence and repetition to discover. They appear in your Cooee Tours day.

Eumundi β€” The Tour Within the Tour

Every Wednesday and Saturday, the small heritage town of Eumundi becomes one of Australia's great open-air market experiences. 600+ stalls, live music from 8am, and 45 years of artisan culture accumulated in the one place. This is not "a market stop on the way to Noosa." This is a destination that some guests travel to Queensland specifically to visit.

Our Classic and Gourmet tours depart on Wednesday and Saturday specifically to include Eumundi as a first stop. Arrival before 9am means the best produce stalls, the most atmospheric music, and the kind of authentic community character that disappears when the busloads arrive at 11am. Morning tea credit is included on the Gourmet tour.

For visitors who arrive at Eumundi expecting "a market" and leave three hours later with cheese, olive oil, handmade jewellery, fresh-ground coffee, and a sourdough loaf β€” this is the normal Eumundi experience. Don't underestimate it.

Wild Koalas β€” Noosa National Park

Noosa National Park's 4,000 hectares of coastal heath and paperbark forest is one of the most accessible genuine koala habitats in Queensland. The resident population along the 2.7km coastal track is well-established β€” our guides have been monitoring the same trees for years and the sighting rate on guided walks is extraordinarily high.

These are wild animals in a functioning ecosystem β€” not a managed encounter, not a zoo. The koalas resting in the fork of a paperbark branch above the coastal track, ten metres from your shoulder, are doing exactly what they'd be doing if you weren't there. The difference between groups who see them and groups who don't is almost entirely down to guide knowledge of which trees to check, and at what point on the track.

On our Noosa National Park walks, we also encounter sea eagles (regular), glossy black-cockatoos (seasonal), echidnas (occasional), and dolphins visible from the Hells Gates clifftop lookout. Spring (August–October) brings koala mothers with joeys β€” the most frequently photographed wildlife sighting across all our Sunshine Coast tours.

The Blackall Range Hinterland

20 minutes behind the beach strip, the Sunshine Coast becomes an entirely different place. The Blackall Range rises to 450 metres above sea level across a 50km ridge of subtropical rainforest, heritage villages, artisan producers, boutique wineries, and waterfall walks that most coastal visitors never discover. Our hinterland-focused tours β€” the Gourmet Tour and the Wine Tour β€” treat this as the primary destination rather than an add-on, and the difference in depth of experience is significant.

🏘️

Montville

The hinterland's most-visited heritage village β€” 450m elevation, Glass House Mountains view, galleries, artisan food producers, and cafΓ©s in a beautifully preserved tin-roofed streetscape. Featured on Classic and Gourmet tours.

πŸ”οΈ

Maleny

The range's most community-minded town β€” Maleny Dairies artisan cheese, the finest Glass House Mountains view in the region, and a Maple Street that rewards unhurried exploration. Featured on Gourmet and Wine tours.

πŸ’§

Kondalilla Falls

A 90-metre cascade in ancient hoop pine forest β€” 2.7km return walk, natural rock pool, and subtropical rainforest that couldn't feel more remote from the beach 20km east. Available on private tours and 3-day itinerary guests.

Koala Expertise

We've walked the Noosa National Park coastal track hundreds of times. We know which trees, which sections, and which time of day deliver the most reliable sightings. Our guests see wild koalas at a rate that genuinely surprises them.

🧺

Eumundi Timing

We arrive at Eumundi before the crowds. Our Wednesday and Saturday departures are timed around the market's rhythms β€” not around coach tour schedules. This single timing decision changes the entire market experience.

πŸ‘₯

Max 14 Guests

Never a coach. Never a number. Our maximum group size of 14 means every guest gets proper attention, flexible pacing, and the sense of a local day out rather than a managed tourist experience.

🏨

Hotel Pickup

We collect from Brisbane CBD, South Bank, and Sunshine Coast accommodation. You don't navigate to a departure point β€” we come to you. This applies to all tours, all days, all departures.

Best Time to Visit the Sunshine Coast

The Sunshine Coast is genuinely excellent year-round β€” but each season changes what's best about it. Here's how to match your visit to the experience you're after.

Summer

December – February

Beach season at its peak β€” warm ocean, vibrant Hastings Street, Eumundi at maximum atmosphere. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent. Do the national park walk early. School holiday crowds in December–January β€” book ahead.

Best for: Beach, Noosa River, summer markets

Autumn ✦ Best

March – May

Our genuine recommendation. Humidity drops, temperatures are perfect (22–26Β°C), the ocean stays warm through April, and the hinterland is at its most atmospheric β€” morning mist, afternoon light on the range, wildflowers starting in the heath. Shoulder season pricing.

Best for: Everything β€” the Sunshine Coast at its finest

Winter ✦ Great

June – August

Spectacularly clear days. Whale watching season begins in June. Hinterland mornings are crisp and beautiful. Best cellar door experience of the year. Ocean cool but all other experiences unaffected. July school holidays bring brief crowds.

Best for: Whales, hinterland, wine tours, photography

Spring

September – November

Wildflowers in the national park heath. Koala mothers with joeys (Aug–Oct). Whale watching through October. Ocean warming from November. Noosa Triathlon (October) adds event energy. Shoulder pricing before December peak.

Best for: Wildlife, wildflowers, festivals, all-round

What Our Guests Say

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"The koala sighting was genuinely one of the most moving wildlife experiences of my life. Our guide stopped the group about 10 metres from the tree, told us to look up slowly β€” and there were two koalas sleeping in the fork, completely unbothered by us. Then we looked across to the next tree and there was another. Three wild koalas in ten minutes. I was not prepared."

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"The Gourmet Tour was extraordinary. Eumundi at 8:30am β€” still quiet, music playing, the best sourdough I've ever eaten still warm from the baker's bag. Noosa National Park walk with koalas. Then a two-course lunch at a hinterland restaurant with wine pairings from producers I'd never heard of. This is how the Sunshine Coast should be experienced."

Oliver & Grace T.
Edinburgh, Scotland Β· Google Reviews, 2024
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"I've lived in Brisbane for eight years and always drove to Noosa myself. The guided tour showed me things I'd walked past dozens of times without understanding β€” the koala habitat signs, the specific paperbark tree species, the reason Noosa managed to stay the way it is. The guide's knowledge turned a day I thought I knew into something completely new."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Sunshine Coast tour from Brisbane?
For a first-time visitor, the Sunshine Coast Classic Tour ($149) gives the widest experience in a single day β€” Eumundi, Noosa National Park, the beach, and the hinterland. For food-focused visitors or couples wanting a more immersive experience, the Gourmet Tour ($189) adds a matched winery lunch and artisan cheese stop. For wine enthusiasts, the Wine Tour ($189) is in a category of its own. If Noosa is your primary interest and you want maximum time there, the dedicated Noosa Day Trip ($149) is the better choice over the broader Classic tour.
Will I definitely see koalas on the Noosa tour?
We can't guarantee wildlife β€” these are wild animals and their movements are their own. However, Noosa National Park's coastal track is genuine koala habitat and our guides know it intimately. The vast majority of our groups see at least one koala; many see two or three. Spring (August–October) brings mothers with joeys and is the highest-sighting period. The key difference between our guided walk and an independent walk is that our guides know which specific trees the resident koalas favour β€” this knowledge, built over hundreds of visits, dramatically improves sighting rates.
Do your tours include Eumundi Markets every day?
Eumundi Markets only operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Our Classic and Gourmet tour departures on those days include Eumundi as a morning stop. On other days, the tour proceeds directly to Noosa β€” the experience is still excellent, but Eumundi is not available. If Eumundi is important to your visit, book a Wednesday or Saturday departure. The Saturday market is larger (600+ stalls vs approximately 300 on Wednesdays); Wednesday mornings are quieter and often feel more authentic.
Can I do a Sunshine Coast tour if I'm already staying on the Sunshine Coast?
Yes β€” we offer pickup from Sunshine Coast accommodation across all our tours (Noosa, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Caloundra). Guests staying on the Sunshine Coast typically have a slightly later pickup time than Brisbane guests since they don't need to cover the Brisbane-to-coast transit time. This also means Sunshine Coast-based guests often get more time at each stop. Contact us when booking to arrange your specific pickup point.
How far is the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane?
The Sunshine Coast is approximately 100km north of Brisbane CBD. Noosa is the furthest point at around 150km (90 minutes to 2 hours by road); Caloundra is closest at about 80km (75 minutes). Our tours depart Brisbane hotels at around 7–7:30am to reach the Sunshine Coast for 8:30–9am, avoiding the worst of the northbound morning traffic. Return to Brisbane is typically around 5:30–6pm.
Is there a tour that covers both Noosa and the Glass House Mountains?
Not in a single day β€” the distance between Noosa (150km north of Brisbane) and the Glass House Mountains (65km north of Brisbane) makes a proper day at both impractical in one guided tour. The two destinations are best experienced on separate days, and both work either as day trips from Brisbane or as day tours from a Sunshine Coast base. Our 3-Day Sunshine Coast Itinerary covers both across separate days, which is the recommended approach for visitors with the time.
