The grown-up food coast

A coast that eats seriously well

The Sunshine Coast has quietly become one of Queensland's best places to eat. It runs on what grows nearby — Maleny dairy, Kenilworth cheese, Glasshouse berries, Mooloolaba trawler catch and hinterland produce — and it plates all of it with an unfussy, sun-and-sea confidence. This is a precinct-by-precinct guide to where to eat, from beachfront institutions to hatted hinterland rooms, and the tables our specialists will book for you.

How the hats work. Ratings below are from the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide, which scores out of 20; a score of 12 or more earns a Chef Hat. The Sunshine Coast holds around twenty hatted rooms across Noosa, Mooloolaba, the hinterland and Peregian.
Noosa Heads

Hastings Street

Noosa's dining-and-boutique strip fronts Main Beach and holds the coast's densest cluster of good tables. Bistro C has looked over the sand since 1992 and remains the go-to for a long beachfront lunch. Locale (Italian) and Rickys River Bar & Restaurant are the hatted names for a dressed-up dinner, while Season and Miss Moneypenny's handle the all-day, see-and-be-seen trade. Book ahead — in summer this street runs at capacity.

Noosa River · Gympie Terrace

Noosaville & the river

A short hop from Hastings Street, the Noosa River at Noosaville is where locals eat. Sum Yung Guys (modern Asian, hatted) and Lanai (hatted) lead a strip that also takes in Noosa Waterfront and Bang Bang. Sunset over the river with a table here is one of the coast's simplest pleasures — and generally easier to book than the beachfront.

Mooloolaba · The Wharf

Mooloolaba

The Esplanade and the marina at The Wharf give Mooloolaba a lively, family-friendly food scene. Bella Venezia (Italian) and Fish House (seafood and steak) are the hatted rooms on the Esplanade. Out on the marina, See Restaurant sits over the water, with RB Dining, Greek-leaning Spero and Pier 33 rounding out a waterside line-up that's ideal before or after a whale-watch cruise.

Montville · Maleny · Yandina

The hinterland's special-occasion tables

An hour inland, the Blackall Range hides the coast's best fine dining. The Long Apron at Spicers Clovelly Estate, Montville, is among the highest-rated rooms in the region — a genuine destination restaurant. The Tamarind at Spicers Tamarind Retreat, Maleny, plates modern pan-Asian food in a rainforest setting. And at Yandina, Spirit House has drawn diners for decades with its Thai food, jungle-garden pond and hands-on cooking school. Any of the three justifies the drive; make a half-day of it with a hinterland tour.

Peregian · Buderim · Maroochydore

Beyond the big three

The coast's food isn't only in Noosa and Mooloolaba. Bask at Peregian Beach and Embassy XO at Sunshine Beach are worth the detour; Honeysuckle and Dee Den have put the leafy town of Buderim on the map; and the fast-growing Maroochydore CBD now fields hatted newcomers such as Soka and Orleans. Wherever you're based, there's a very good dinner within twenty minutes.

Eat like a local

Markets & produce

Some of the best eating here isn't in a restaurant at all. The Eumundi Markets (Wednesday and Saturday) turn out everything from wood-fired pizza to fresh-shucked oysters, and the region's farmers' markets — Noosa, Caloundra, Kawana — are a direct line to the produce that makes the restaurants sing. See our Eumundi Markets guide for the full run-down.

Good to know

Where to eat: your questions

The densest fine dining is on Hastings Street, Noosa and along the Noosa River at Noosaville, with a second cluster at Mooloolaba and The Wharf. For a special-occasion meal, the hinterland hatted rooms — The Long Apron at Montville and The Tamarind at Maleny — are worth the drive. In the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide the coast holds around twenty Chef Hats across these precincts.

Hatted rooms in the 2026 Australian Good Food Guide include The Long Apron (Montville), The Tamarind (Maleny), Bask (Peregian), Lanai and Sum Yung Guys (Noosaville), plus Locale, Rickys, Bella Venezia, Fish House, Spirit House (Yandina) and Honeysuckle (Buderim), among others. A guide rating of 12 or more out of 20 earns a Hat.

On Hastings Street, Bistro C has fronted Main Beach since 1992, while Locale (Italian) and Rickys River Bar are the hatted picks. Around the corner on the Noosa River at Noosaville, Sum Yung Guys (modern Asian) and Lanai are the standouts, both hatted and both booked out well ahead in summer.

Very — it is where the coast keeps its best special-occasion tables. The Long Apron at Spicers Clovelly Estate (Montville) is among the highest-rated rooms in the region; The Tamarind at Spicers Tamarind Retreat (Maleny) pairs pan-Asian food with a rainforest setting; and Spirit House at Yandina is a long-standing Thai destination with its own cooking school.

For the hatted rooms and anything on Hastings Street, yes — especially in the December–January peak, over Easter and during festivals like Noosa Food & Wine (June). Two to four weeks ahead is sensible for the marquee restaurants. Casual beachfront cafes and the Eumundi Markets food stalls are walk-up.

No. Australian venues pay full award wages, so tipping is genuinely optional — a small tip for exceptional service is appreciated but never expected, and there is no set percentage. Menu prices are what you pay, though some venues add a modest surcharge on Sundays and public holidays.
