The Gold Coast is 60 kilometres of golden, patrolled coastline running from South Stradbroke Island in the north to Coolangatta on the New South Wales border — and it's the easiest big holiday in Queensland to reach. Brisbane is an hour up the M1, and Gold Coast Airport (OOL) sits just 25 minutes south of the beaches.
The beaches are why most people come, and each has its own character: the high-rise buzz and skyline of Surfers Paradise, the world-class right-hand point break at Burleigh Heads, the calm family water of Main Beach, the legendary surf of Snapper Rocks and Kirra, and Tallebudgera Creek — the safest natural swim on the coast for young children. Broadbeach brings the dining and the light rail; Palm Beach and Currumbin bring the wildlife and the local feel.
The weather makes it a year-round destination: a subtropical climate with more than 300 days of sunshine, warm summers (21–28°C), mild clear winters (12–21°C), and water that stays swimmable all year. Winter is quietly the best-kept secret — mild days, short theme-park queues, and humpback whales migrating past the coast from June to November.

Just over the border — the Cape Byron lighthouse walk to Australia's most easterly point, the beach town's markets and cafes, and dolphins (or winter whales) offshore. An easy, iconic day out.

Dates are for 2026 and were correct at the time of writing; several are annual events whose exact dates shift year to year — always confirm on the official event site before booking. The Gold Coast 500 and Magic Millions in particular can lift accommodation prices sharply, so lock in your stay early if you're travelling around them.
