Warner Bros. Movie World is the Gold Coast's original world-class theme park — a slice of Hollywood at Oxenford where blockbuster-themed coasters, DC Super Heroes, Looney Tunes and a brand-new Wizard of Oz land share the one archway. It's the park most first-timers picture when they think 'Gold Coast theme parks', and in 2026 it's bigger and better themed than ever. Here's how to do it properly. Pair it with our full Gold Coast theme parks guide for the broader plan.

The rides, by zone

The Park, Zone by Zone

Movie World splits neatly into a high-thrill DC area, the new Wizard of Oz land, a dedicated kids' zone, and a run of shows — pick your pace by who you're with.

The adrenaline core is the DC Universe. Its flagship, the DC Rivals HyperCoaster, remains the tallest, longest and fastest roller coaster in the Southern Hemisphere — a near two-minute run of drops, airtime hills and a beyond-vertical descent at speed, with an optional rear-facing seat that launches you backwards into the first plunge with no track visible beneath you. Around it sit Superman Escape (a launch coaster), the Batwing Spaceshot vertical tower, the Green Lantern Coaster, The Flash: Speed Force and Doomsday Destroyer. This cluster is the reason coaster enthusiasts rate Movie World so highly.

The park's biggest recent change is the Wizard of Oz precinct, a world-first themed land fully operational in 2026. Its two family coasters — the dual-track Kansas Twister and the suspended Flight of the Wicked Witch — are pitched perfectly for families who want a coaster thrill without the over-vertical intensity of the DC rides, wrapped in some of the most detailed theming the park has ever built. The much-loved Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster also reopened in late 2025 after a major refurbishment, with new effects and projections.

Families with younger children should head straight for the Kids' WB Fun Zone, where the Road Runner junior coaster, a Looney Tunes carousel, a junior driving school and a clutch of gentle rides keep little ones happy. Between rides, the daily Star Parade down Main Street, the air-conditioned Roxy 4D theatre, character meet-and-greets and the live Spy Chase stunt show give everyone a reason to slow down — and a welcome break from the Queensland sun.

Insider tip: Ride DC Rivals first thing, before the queues build — and if you're a confident coaster rider, book the rear-facing seat for a completely different experience. Just check the park's published 2026 maintenance schedule before you go: headline rides like DC Rivals and Superman Escape take turns closing for servicing, often around the April and June–July holiday periods.

Who Movie World Suits

Movie World is the most thrill-led of the Gold Coast's big parks, so it's the natural first choice for teenagers, adults and coaster enthusiasts — the DC line-up alone justifies the day. But don't write it off for young families: between the Wizard of Oz coasters, the Kids' WB Fun Zone, the parade and the shows, there's a genuinely full day for primary-aged children and even toddlers. The one group it suits least is travellers chasing animals or water — that's Sea World and the water parks respectively.

If you're travelling as a mixed group with a range of ages and nerve, Movie World handles it well: thrill-seekers can knock over the DC coasters while the rest of the group works through the family rides and shows, regrouping for the parade. A single day here is one of the most reliable crowd-pleasers on the whole coast.

Timing

When to Go & How Long

A full day, ideally on a quieter weekday outside the school holidays.

Plan a full day at Movie World and don't try to pair it with another park on the same day — there are around 30 rides, attractions and shows, and rushing it wastes the multi-ride coaster passes that make the trip worthwhile. Gates generally open about 9:30am with rides from 10am to 5pm, extending during holidays and events. The park closes on ANZAC Day and Christmas Day.

For the shortest queues and most comfortable weather, target the autumn and winter shoulders (roughly March–May and June–August, avoiding the July school holidays) and visit on a weekday. The Gold Coast's mild, dry winters are ideal theme-park weather, and mid-week crowds are a fraction of weekend and holiday peaks. Avoid the December–January and July school holidays if you can, when the park runs at capacity.

Seasonal events are worth planning around too: the DC Super-Heroes & Super-Villains season runs across the year, while Fright Nights in October and White Christmas in December transform the park after dark — great fun for older kids and adults, less so for little ones who'll be ready for bed.

Save on tickets: Single-day tickets are usually around $10 cheaper booked online in advance than at the gate, and if you're visiting more than one Village Roadshow park, a multi-day or multi-park pass (Movie World + Sea World + Wet'n'Wild) or an annual pass is far better value. Decide how many parks you'll do before you buy.
Getting there

Getting There — the Easy Way

Oxenford is 30–40 minutes north of Surfers Paradise; we take the driving and parking off your plate.

Movie World sits at Oxenford on the Pacific Motorway (M1), about 30–40 minutes north of Surfers Paradise and a similar run south from Brisbane. You can drive and pay for parking on site, or take a public bus, but the easiest option for a theme-park day is to let someone else handle the logistics.

Cooee Tours collects from Gold Coast accommodation in every precinct and runs transfers to the northern theme-park cluster, so you arrive fresh, skip the parking, and don't lose half an hour at each end of the day. We can also build combined itineraries — a theme-park day paired with the hinterland, the beaches or a wildlife sanctuary later in the trip — so the whole holiday flows without a hire car.

Beating the queues

Doing Movie World Smart

A little strategy turns a good day into a great one.

The single biggest lever on your day is timing your big rides. Be at the gate for opening and head straight to DC Rivals HyperCoaster and Superman Escape before the queues build — the first hour is comfortably the most productive of the day. Save the shows, the 4D theatre and the Kids' WB rides for the middle of the day when coaster queues peak, then return to your favourites in the last hour as crowds thin.

If you're visiting on a busier day, a ride express pass (sold separately) can be worth it to skip the main queues on the headline coasters, and the park's app shows live wait times so you can chase the shortest lines. A photo pass is the other common add-on for families who want the on-ride shots without paying per ride. None of these are essential on a quiet weekday — they earn their keep on holidays and weekends.

Finally, build the 3:30pm Star Parade into your plan: stake out a spot near the Roxy Theatre about 20 minutes ahead for the best sightlines and character interaction, then use the parade window to ride a popular coaster while much of the crowd is watching.

Food & the practical stuff

Food, Tickets & Practicalities

Movie World, like the other Village Roadshow parks, operates a no-outside-food policy, with designated picnic areas outside the gates if you'd rather bring your own and re-enter. Inside, there's a full range of food outlets from quick bites to sit-down meals, and annual passholders get a food-and-beverage discount. Paid parking is available on site, with premium options closer to the gate.

Check the height requirements before you queue with younger children — the big DC coasters have minimum heights, while the Wizard of Oz coasters and Kids' WB rides are far more accommodating. Lockers are available for bags and loose items you don't want to carry onto rides. And as always, confirm opening hours and the maintenance schedule for your date so you're not caught out by a closed headline ride.

Multi-park planning

Pairing Movie World with the Other Parks

Movie World shares ownership with Sea World and Wet'n'Wild (the water park right next door at Oxenford), so if you're doing more than one, a multi-day or multi-park pass is far better value than separate single-day tickets — and a 5- or 7-day pass spreads the parks across your holiday without the pressure of cramming. The golden rule still applies: one park per day. Each is a full day in its own right, and doubling up just means queuing twice and seeing half of each.

A sensible Gold Coast theme-park week might pair Movie World with a Wet'n'Wild afternoon on a hot day, a separate full day at Dreamworld for the wildlife, and Sea World on a coast-side day — with beach and hinterland days in between. Our team can help you sequence the parks and handle the transfers so the week flows.

A sample day

A Sample Day at Movie World

Here's how a well-paced first-timer's day tends to flow.

9:30am — gates open. Go straight to the DC Universe and ride DC Rivals HyperCoaster while the queue is shortest, then Superman Escape and the Batwing Spaceshot in quick succession. The first hour is the most productive of the whole day, so spend it on the headline thrills.

Late morning. Move to the Wizard of Oz precinct for Kansas Twister and Flight of the Wicked Witch, and ride the refurbished Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster. Families with little ones can peel off to the Kids' WB Fun Zone here while thrill-seekers keep working the coasters.

Lunch & midday. Eat early to beat the rush, then use the hottest part of the day for the air-conditioned Roxy 4D theatre and a stunt or live show — the queues for coasters peak now, so it's the smart time to sit and watch.

3:30pm — the Star Parade. Claim a spot near the Roxy Theatre about 20 minutes early, or use the parade window to jump back on a popular coaster while much of the crowd is watching the procession.

Late afternoon. Spend the final hour re-riding your favourites — queues typically ease before the 5pm close — and finish on DC Rivals if you have the legs for it. Done this way, a single day covers the whole park comfortably.

The verdict

Movie World — The Bottom Line

If you only have time for one Gold Coast theme park and your group skews towards teenagers and adults, Movie World is the pick — the DC Rivals-led coaster line-up is genuinely world-class, and the new Wizard of Oz land and refreshed shows mean even confirmed thrill-seekers get a varied day. Young families are better served than the park's reputation suggests, but pure animal-lovers and water-park devotees will get more from Sea World and the water parks respectively.

Do it on a quiet weekday in the cooler shoulder season, ride the headline coasters first, book online to save, and let the day breathe around the parade and shows. Build it into a multi-park pass if you're visiting Sea World or Wet'n'Wild too, keep to one park a day, and you'll come away feeling you saw the lot rather than queued for half of it. For most first-timers, a well-planned Movie World day is the definitive Gold Coast theme-park experience — and the one the kids talk about for months.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

The headline thrill ride is the DC Rivals HyperCoaster — the tallest, longest and fastest coaster in the Southern Hemisphere, with an optional rear-facing seat for the brave. Other big-ticket rides include Superman Escape, the Batwing Spaceshot tower, Green Lantern Coaster, The Flash: Speed Force and Doomsday Destroyer. The newer Wizard of Oz precinct adds two family coasters, Kansas Twister and Flight of the Wicked Witch.

Yes — it's better for little ones than its thrill-ride reputation suggests. The Kids' WB Fun Zone has a junior coaster (Road Runner), a carousel, a junior driving school and gentle Looney Tunes rides, the Wizard of Oz coasters are family-friendly, and the daily Star Parade, character meet-and-greets and the air-conditioned Roxy 4D theatre give younger families plenty to do between the big rides.

A full day. With around 30 rides, attractions and shows, plus the parade and a couple of 4D and stunt shows, most families fill the gates-open-to-close window comfortably. If you want to ride the major coasters more than once and catch the shows, don't try to combine it with a second park on the same day.

Prices are dynamic and change with the date, but single-day tickets are typically around $10 cheaper booked online in advance than at the gate. Multi-day and multi-park passes (combining Movie World with Sea World and Wet'n'Wild) and annual passes offer much better value if you're visiting more than one park — always book online before you go.

Gates generally open around 9:30am with rides running from about 10am to 5pm, with extended hours during school holidays and special events. The park is closed on ANZAC Day (25 April) and Christmas Day. Always confirm the hours for your specific date on the park's website, and check its published maintenance schedule so a must-ride coaster isn't closed when you visit.

Movie World is at Oxenford in the city's north, roughly 30–40 minutes from Surfers Paradise up the M1 motorway. You can drive (paid parking on site), catch a public bus, or — the easiest option — let us collect you from your hotel and handle the transfers so you arrive fresh and skip the parking.

Absolutely. The coaster line-up — led by DC Rivals — is genuinely world-class and draws adult thrill-seekers and enthusiasts from across the country, and the stunt shows, 4D experiences and DC theming give grown-up visitors plenty beyond the rides. Quieter weekdays in the autumn and winter shoulders are the sweet spot for adults wanting short queues.
