Marine Science Field Notes

Six Behaviours
You Might See

Humpbacks are the most active surface-display cetaceans on the planet. Our marine biologists will identify each behaviour as it happens and explain its biological purpose.

Breach
Full body surface jump

The most dramatic display — up to 90% of a 40-ton body launches from the water. Purposes include communication, parasite removal, play and competitive displays between males.

Frequency
Tail Slap (Lobtailing)
Fluke-surface impact

The iconic whale tail raised high and slapped forcefully onto the water surface. Produces a thunderous crack audible for kilometres. Used for communication and occasionally as aggression signal.

Frequency
Spy Hop
Vertical surface posture

The whale rises vertically, holding its head above the surface for several seconds to survey the horizon. Whales are genuinely looking around — at the boat, the sky, other whales. One of the most intimate encounters.

Frequency
Pectoral Fin Wave
Flipper surface display

A humpback's enormous white pectoral fins — up to 4.6m long — waved or slapped against the water surface. Particularly common in mothers with calves and during social encounters.

Frequency
Logging
Surface resting posture

A whale floating motionless at the surface, barely moving. Whales sleep uni-hemispherically — half the brain sleeps while the other maintains breathing. Allows boats to approach for exceptional close encounters.

Frequency
Fluke Up Dive
Tail-raised deep dive entry

As a whale descends deeply, it raises its tail fluke — the classic "goodbye wave." Each fluke has a unique pigmentation pattern used by scientists for individual identification, like a fingerprint. The best photography moment of any cruise.

What Guests
Say

★★★★★

"A mother and calf surfaced alongside our vessel for nearly ten minutes. Complete silence fell over the entire boat. I've never experienced anything like it in my life. The marine biologist's knowledge made it even more extraordinary."

Sydney, NSW · Mother-Calf Encounter

★★★★★

"Took our 7-year-old son and he is still talking about it two months later. We saw three separate breaches within ten minutes — the captain positioned us perfectly. Worth every dollar and then some. Already planning next year."

Melbourne, VIC · Family Cruise

★★★★★

"As a wildlife photographer this was exceptional — the crew knew exactly when and where to position the vessel. I got the breach shot I've been trying to capture for years. The hydrophone experience hearing the whale song was something I'll never forget."
