A Short History of Mountain Winemaking

For much of the twentieth century, Tamborine Mountain was known for rainforest and dairy farms rather than grapes, and the idea of fine wine this far north was treated with friendly scepticism. That changed from the late 1980s and 1990s, when a wave of small family estates planted vines along the mountain's winding roads and opened cellar doors, pioneering what is now recognised as a genuine Queensland wine region.

The Tamborine Mountain Distillery joined them in 1993, proving that world-class spirits could be made from local and native ingredients. Today the plateau is home to more than ten wineries, an award-winning distillery, a craft brewery and a cheese factory — most within a short drive of the Gallery Walk village — and the intimate, handcrafted style forged by those early pioneers is exactly what makes touring here feel so personal.

Verdelho is something of a Queensland signature — a lively tropical white with citrus and stone-fruit notes — while wild-ferment Chardonnay and juicy Chambourcin show just how distinctive the mountain's cool-climate fruit can be. Queensland's First National Park

The rainforest wrapping Tamborine Mountain isn't just beautiful — it's historic. The Witches Falls section of Tamborine National Park was declared in 1908, making it Queensland's very first national park and one of the oldest in the world. Its walking tracks wind past giant strangler figs, palm groves and lily-covered lagoons, a living reminder of how this mountain looked long before the vineyards arrived.

Gondwana World Heritage Rainforest

These are remnants of the ancient Gondwana rainforests that once covered the southern supercontinent — the same subtropical forest type protected across the Gold Coast hinterland's World Heritage wilderness. The mountain's national parks safeguard an astonishing share of the region's biodiversity — around 85% of its animal species and 65% of its plant species — packed into a cool, green plateau you can explore between cellar doors.

The Rainforest Skywalk

Set on 30 acres of private rainforest beside the crystal-clear rock pools of Cedar Creek, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a highlight of the day. A 1.5-kilometre trail leads onto 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges through the upper canopy, finishing with a 40-metre cantilever that soars 30 metres above the creek and forest floor — a view of the rainforest almost no-one ever sees, from the level where the birds, orchids and canopy creatures live.

Wildlife & Waterfalls

The mountain teems with life — pademelons and lyrebirds, platypus in the creeks, koalas in the gums, and the dazzling, endangered Richmond birdwing butterfly. Seasonal waterfalls including Witches Falls, Curtis Falls and Cedar Creek Falls tumble through the forest after rain, and after dark the mountain is famous for the glow worms that light the walls at Curtis Falls.
