Twenty minutes of climbing turns the coast into cool-air mountain village: Gallery Walk's flat browsing strip of galleries, fudge shops and cellar doors, rainforest boardwalks built level through ancient trees, and lookouts across the Scenic Rim served steps from the coach. It's the region's most senior-friendly day, which is exactly why it anchors our most popular tour.
World Heritage rainforest that asks remarkably little of your knees: Purling Brook and the Natural Bridge meet you close to the road, viewing platforms are fenced and even, and the air arrives ten degrees kinder than the beach in summer. Winter mornings here — mist in the valleys, kettles at the kiosk — convert more guests than any brochure we've printed.
Between Southport's Broadwater and Coolangatta's point, the coast keeps a gentler register than its skyline suggests: flat esplanade paths with benches every hundred metres, surf-club lunches with step-free entry and million-dollar views, and winter whale-watching from headlands you park beside. The coach opens day trips the car makes a chore: west over the Range to Toowoomba's September Carnival of Flowers, inland to the Scenic Rim's farm gates, or south through the border ranges. Springbrook
Natural Bridge & the falls
Purling Brook Falls has a lookout a short, sealed walk from the car park with the full drop in view — the circuit track below it descends several hundred steps and is not part of our day. Natural Bridge is a graded loop of about a kilometre with some steps and a gentle climb back up; it is the one stop on this itinerary where we ask guests honestly whether they are up for it, because the return leg is the harder half. Glow worm viewing happens inside the cave at the base, in the dark, on uneven rock.

Gallery Walk & the rainforest
Gallery Walk is a flat, sealed village street with parking at both ends, plentiful seating and no gradient worth mentioning — one of the easiest stops we make anywhere. The Rainforest Skywalk is a steel walkway with a gentle grade and handrails throughout, suitable for most guests though not for wheelchairs on the lower cantilever section. Cedar Creek Falls and Curtis Falls both involve descending tracks; we treat them as optional and always name the alternative.

Wildlife Sanctuary
Sealed paths throughout with frequent seating and shade, and a free miniature railway that loops the site — genuinely useful, because the sanctuary is larger than it looks and the far end is a fair walk. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters can be hired on site and should be booked ahead in school holidays. The lorikeet feeding is standing-room, but there is seating at the rear of the deck with a clear view.

Burleigh, Broadbeach & Coolangatta
The oceanway paths linking the coastal suburbs are flat, sealed and continuous, with seating and shade at regular intervals — good walking at any pace. The Burleigh Headland track is a different matter: it climbs, and while the surface is good the gradient is sustained. We park at the northern end so the headland is optional rather than unavoidable. Beach access at Broadbeach and Coolangatta includes ramped entries and, in season, beach wheelchairs on request.

The coast is a year-round destination, which is true and also unhelpful. What actually changes for an older traveller is the humidity, the crowds and whether the hinterland roads are wet — and those swing hard between seasons. The Gold Coast sits in a subtropical band, so nothing here is ever genuinely cold; what varies is how hard the air works against you, and how much of the day is comfortable to spend outdoors. Below is how we actually schedule across the year, rather than the usual assurance that any month is as good as another.
Autumn
March – May
Our pick, and it is not close. The summer humidity has broken, days settle into the mid-twenties, the water is still warm from summer, and the school-holiday crowds have gone. Hinterland roads are dry, which matters more than people expect on the Tamborine and Springbrook climbs. Rainforest is still green from the wet, so the Springbrook and Natural Bridge waterfalls are running properly rather than trickling.
Glow worm evenings are at their best in the warmer end of this window, and the drive back down the range is comfortable rather than sweltering.

June – August
Dry, mild and clear — daytime temperatures in the low twenties on the coast and several degrees cooler on the mountain, which catches people out. Bring a jacket for Tamborine and Springbrook; hinterland mornings can start in single figures. Humpback whales pass the coast through these months and are visible from the Point Danger and Burleigh headlands without needing a boat.
Visibility from the hinterland lookouts is at its best in winter, when the haze lifts. This is peak season for southern visitors, so book earlier than you think you need to.

September – November
A very good stretch, warming steadily, with wildflowers through the hinterland and the coastal walks at their most pleasant. September and October are close to ideal. By late November the humidity is climbing and afternoon storms become a real feature, so we start moving the walking portions of the day earlier.
This is also when the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers runs, and we operate day tours up the range for it from the Gold Coast — a long day, but an almost entirely seated one.
Very good, early onSummer
December – February
The season that needs the most planning. Days run to the low thirties with high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms are common rather than occasional. For guests with heart or respiratory conditions this is the window where a standard touring day becomes genuinely taxing, and we say so rather than sell it.
It still works with adjustments: earlier departures, hinterland rather than coast, more time in air-conditioned settings, and no walking after midday. Marine stingers are more likely in these months and patrolled, netted beaches are the only ones we swim at.
Workable with careA note on the hinterland roads. The climbs to Tamborine Mountain and Springbrook are steep, narrow and full of switchbacks, and they are the single most common reason guests tell us they stopped driving themselves. In the wet they are worse. Our drivers run these roads weekly and know where the pull-offs and the comfort stops are — if the hinterland is on your list and you are hesitant about the drive, that is exactly the day to hand over.
