Where Is Runaway Bay?

The Family-Boating Quiet Bay

Runaway Bay QLD, postcode 4216, sits on the northern Gold Coast on the protected Broadwater — approximately 12 km north of Surfers Paradise, 7 km north of Southport, and a few minutes south of Paradise Point and Hope Island. It’s one of the suburbs that locals quietly love and tourists often overlook: residential, family-oriented, water-facing, with a strong boat-owning culture and the kind of weekday rhythm that has nothing to do with Surfers Paradise.

Three things define the suburb. The Broadwater foreshore — calm, sheltered water perfect for paddling, swimming and fishing, with playgrounds, picnic shelters and BBQ areas backing onto Norfolk Island pines. The marina culture — many residents have boats, the Runaway Bay Marina is a working community hub, and Wave Break Island sits directly east in the middle of the Broadwater as one of the great Gold Coast day-trip destinations. And the Gold Coast Sports Super Centre — a long-running Queensland high-performance sporting facility hosting indoor courts, pools and athletics, open to the public for casual use.

Round it out with one of the largest regional shopping centres on the coast (Runaway Bay Shopping Centre, anchored by Coles, Woolworths, Kmart, Target and a cinema), the waterfront Bayview Bowls Club, and easy 10-15 minute access to the Theme Parks at Oxenford via the M1. Runaway Bay isn’t loud. That’s the point.

The Calm-Water Calendar

Like Southport just to the south, Runaway Bay doesn’t pin its identity to single-weekend festivals. Its rhythm is the steady year-round flow of family boating, foreshore weekends and the convenient base for northern Gold Coast exploration.

Runaway Bay Weather

When to Visit

Runaway Bay shares the warm subtropical climate of the central and northern Gold Coast, with the bonus that the Broadwater stays usable for paddling and family swimming even when the open ocean is rough.

Summer (Dec-Feb)
25-30°C

Peak season for foreshore picnics and Wave Break Island day trips. Hot, humid, with afternoon storms in January-February. Wave Break Island can be cut off briefly by stormy conditions — check the forecast before booking a charter.

Autumn (Mar-May)
22-26°C

One of the best times for paddleboarding the calm Broadwater. Warm dry days, clear water, less congestion at the Sports Super Centre pools. Whale watching cruises depart from Runaway Bay Marina from May with the northern humpback migration.

Winter (Jun-Aug)
12-22°C

Mild, dry, sunny — peak whale watching season with humpbacks frequenting the seaway just east of Wave Break Island. The Sports Super Centre indoor pools come into their own. Foreshore picnics still very pleasant in the middle of the day.

Spring (Sep-Nov)
18-26°C

Warming weather, the southern whale return migration with mothers and calves passing through, and increasingly long late afternoons on the foreshore. Runaway Bay is largely insulated from Schoolies Week chaos in late November — family-friendly accommodation stays calm.
