Welcome to Melbourne
Stylish, arty and endlessly walkable, Melbourne — Naarm to its Traditional Owners — is Australia's cultural, coffee and sporting capital, strung along the Yarra River in the country's fastest-growing city. Its genius is in the detail: graffiti-splashed laneways and gilded arcades, hidden bars and world-class galleries, distinctive neighbourhoods and a calendar stacked with sport and festivals. It's also the gateway to the Great Ocean Road and the Yarra Valley. This is the guide we give our own guests — the laneways, the culture, the sport and how to plan it.
The city's creative heart
Melbourne rewards the curious. Duck into the laneways — Hosier Lane's ever-changing street art, the café huddle of Degraves Street, the Victorian elegance of the Block and Royal Arcades — and you'll find the city's soul (and its famous coffee). A short stroll away, the arts precinct gathers the free NGV, the Melbourne Museum, ACMI and the State Library, with Federation Square and Flinders Street Station close by. It's a city built for wandering.
The MCG & the villages
Melbourne lives for its sport — the mighty MCG, the Australian Open, the AFL Grand Final, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup are all part of the city's DNA. Off the field, each neighbourhood has its own character: bohemian Fitzroy, Italian Carlton, bayside St Kilda, Vietnamese Richmond and fashionable South Yarra. Add the markets and dining, and there's a different Melbourne for every mood.
A base for Victoria
Some of Australia's best day trips start in Melbourne. Drive the Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles, sip your way through the Yarra Valley wineries, soak in the Mornington Peninsula hot springs, watch the penguins waddle ashore on Phillip Island, or ride the Puffing Billy steam train through the Dandenongs. Most are within one to two hours, and we can handle the touring and transfers so you can simply enjoy the ride.
The essentials
Planning Melbourne: your questions
Absolutely — Melbourne is Australia's cultural, coffee and sporting capital, and one of its most rewarding cities. Lose yourself in the laneways and arcades, take in the free galleries and museums of the arts precinct, catch a game at the MCG, wander distinctive neighbourhoods, and use it as a base for the Great Ocean Road, the Yarra Valley and Phillip Island. Add world-class food and coffee, and it's a city that rewards return visits.
Three to four days does the city justice — a laneways-and-arcades day, an arts-and-culture day, and time for the neighbourhoods, the Yarra and the markets. But Melbourne is also the gateway to some of Australia's best day trips — the Great Ocean Road, the Yarra Valley wineries, Phillip Island's penguins — so a week lets you pair the city with the country. It's an easy place to fill any length of stay.
Melbourne is famous for "four seasons in one day", so pack layers whenever you come. Autumn (March–May) is often the loveliest — mild, settled and golden — while spring brings the AFL Grand Final and Spring Racing Carnival. Summer is warm (with the odd 40°C day) and full of festivals and the Australian Open in January, and winter is cold and grey but great for the arts, food and cosy laneway bars. See our best time to visit guide.
Easily, and often for free. Melbourne has the world's largest tram network, and travel within the CBD's Free Tram Zone (plus the heritage City Circle tram) costs nothing. Beyond that, trams, trains and buses run on a Myki card, and the new Metro Tunnel (opened 2025) has added five underground stations. From the airport, the SkyBus reaches the city in about 30 minutes — note there's still no airport train. See getting around.
Its laneways and street art, a world-famous coffee and dining scene, and a packed calendar as Australia's sporting and events capital — the Australian Open, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the AFL Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup all call it home. Add the free galleries of the NGV and the cultural precinct, distinctive neighbourhoods, and the gateway to the Great Ocean Road, and Melbourne packs a lot into one stylish, walkable city.
