Melbourne is compact and brilliantly connected, so almost any central area makes a good base — the choice is really about the mood you want. The buzz of the CBD laneways, riverside Southbank, bayside St Kilda or hip Fitzroy. Here's how the main areas compare, the hotels worth knowing, and when to book.
CBD, Southbank, St Kilda & the north
The CBD is the natural first-timer's base — laneways, trams and the Free Tram Zone on your doorstep. Southbank is the riverside option, near the arts precinct, Crown and skyline views; St Kilda is the beachy, boho-glam choice by the bay; and Fitzroy and Carlton put you among the best bars and cafés. Docklands is modern and often better value. Thanks to the tram network, none of it is far from the action.
From landmark luxury to boutique
Melbourne's hotels are as stylish as the city. At the top sit the Ritz-Carlton Melbourne (Australia's tallest hotel, opened 2023), W Melbourne on Flinders Lane, the grand heritage Hotel Windsor, the design-led QT Melbourne and Crown Towers at Southbank. For boutique character, United Places overlooking the Botanic Gardens and the newer StandardX in Fitzroy stand out. Events & timing
Melbourne generally has good availability, but its event calendar drives demand: the Australian Open (January), the Grand Prix (March), the AFL Grand Final (late September) and the Melbourne Cup carnival (early November) all fill the city and push up rates. Families and those wanting river walks often prefer Southbank; laneway-lovers lean to the CBD.

It spans every budget. Hostels and budget hotels start modestly, mid-range hotels and apartments are plentiful in the CBD and Docklands, and there's a strong luxury tier (Ritz-Carlton, W, Crown, boutique stays). Melbourne is broadly comparable to Sydney on price, with more value often found in Docklands, St Kilda and the inner suburbs than the CBD core. Prices spike around major events — plan around them where you can.
