Melbourne day trips
Half of Melbourne's appeal lies just beyond it. Within one to two hours are some of Australia's most famous escapes — a world-renowned coastal drive, cool-climate wine country, penguins on parade, hot springs and a steam train through the hills. Here are the best day trips from the city, and how to do them.
The Great Ocean Road
No day trip is more famous than the Great Ocean Road — a spectacular coastal drive west of Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles, the towering limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean. The route winds past surf beaches, rainforest and clifftop lookouts; it's a long day by car (or an easy one on a guided tour), and rewards an overnight if you have time. Yarra Valley, Phillip Island & Mornington
South and east, three more classics beckon. The Yarra Valley (about an hour) is Victoria's premier cool-climate wine region, with cellar doers, Healesville Sanctuary and art at TarraWarra. The Mornington Peninsula (about 1–1.5 hours) pairs wineries with bay beaches and the famous Peninsula Hot Springs. And Phillip Island (about 1.5–2 hours) delivers the nightly Penguin Parade — a wildlife spectacle that's a hit with all ages.
The Dandenongs & Ballarat
Closer to home, the Dandenong Ranges (about an hour east) offer cool fern-gullies, mountain-ash forest, garden estates and the beloved Puffing Billy steam railway winding through the hills. Further west, Ballarat (about 90 minutes) brings the gold rush to life at Sovereign Hill, the open-air museum, complete with its "AURA" sound-and-light night show. Melbourne day trips: your questions
Melbourne is the gateway to some of Australia's finest day trips. The headline is the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles; close behind are the Yarra Valley wineries, the Mornington Peninsula (hot springs and beaches), Phillip Island for the Penguin Parade, and the Dandenong Ranges with the Puffing Billy steam train. Ballarat's Sovereign Hill adds gold-rush history. Most are one to two hours away.
You can, but it's a big day. The full coastal Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles and back is around 550 km return — most day tours run 12+ hours, or you can take a faster inland route one way. It's glorious but long, so many travellers prefer an overnight to enjoy it at a relaxed pace. (A fun fact: there were never twelve Apostles — only ever nine sea stacks, and seven or eight remain today.)
On Phillip Island, about 1.5–2 hours south-east, where the world-famous Penguin Parade sees hundreds of little penguins waddle ashore at dusk each evening at Summerland Beach. It's one of Victoria's top nature experiences, with tiered viewing and a modern visitor centre. (You can also see a smaller wild colony in the city itself, at St Kilda Pier.) It makes a great day or overnight trip, especially with kids.
Very much — the Yarra Valley, about an hour from Melbourne, is Victoria's premier wine region, known for cool-climate chardonnay, pinot noir and sparkling, with dozens of cellar doors, produce and the excellent Healesville Sanctuary wildlife park and TarraWarra art museum. A guided wine tour lets everyone taste without worrying about driving. It pairs beautifully with the neighbouring Dandenong Ranges.
A car gives you the most freedom, but many of the best spots — the Great Ocean Road, Yarra Valley wineries, Phillip Island at dusk — are more relaxing (and, for wine, safer) on a guided tour with transfers included.
