Melbourne events 2026
Melbourne is Australia's events capital, and its calendar rarely pauses — a tennis Grand Slam, a Formula 1 race, comedy and food festivals, a winter arts season, footy's grand final and the race that stops a nation. Here's the 2026 line-up, with the spring showpieces still to come. Dates are confirmed where shown; a couple recur annually — check nearer the time.
The Open, the Grand Prix & the festivals
The year opens at full throttle. The Australian Open fills Melbourne Park in January; then autumn delivers a run of icons — the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park (6–8 March), the Moomba Festival on the Labour Day long weekend (5–9 March), the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival (20–29 March) and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (25 March–19 April, its 40th year). It's the busiest, most festive stretch of the Melbourne calendar.
RISING & MIFF
Winter is when Melbourne's cultural heart beats loudest. RISING (27 May–8 June) is the city's flagship winter arts festival — a spectacular mix of music, art and light that lit up the depths of winter (it replaced the old Melbourne International Arts Festival and absorbed White Night). In August, the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) (6–23 August) fills cinemas across the city. Both are perfect reasons to embrace a cold, cosy, culture-rich Melbourne winter.
The Grand Final & the Cup
The biggest events still ahead this year come in spring. The AFL Grand Final at the MCG (Saturday 26 September) is the sporting climax of the year, and a week of festivities builds around it. Then the Spring Racing Carnival takes over Flemington, crowned by the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3 November — a public holiday in Melbourne and a nationwide spectacle of racing and fashion. Book early for both; the whole city dresses up.

Melbourne's calendar is world-class. The sporting giants are the Australian Open (January), the Formula 1 Grand Prix (6–8 March), the AFL Grand Final (Sat 26 September) and the Melbourne Cup (Tue 3 November). On the culture side, the Comedy Festival (Mar–Apr), Food & Wine Festival (March), the RISING winter arts festival (late May–June) and MIFF film festival (August) are the highlights, with the still-to-come spring events the big drawcards this year.
The AFL Grand Final is set for Saturday 26 September 2026 at the MCG — the climax of the football season and one of the biggest days on Melbourne's calendar, wrapped in a week of festivities (including the Grand Final parade). The Melbourne Cup — "the race that stops a nation" — runs on Tuesday 3 November 2026 at Flemington, the centrepiece of the Spring Racing Carnival (Derby Day 31 October, Oaks Day 5 November, Stakes Day 7 November). Cup Day is a public holiday in metropolitan Melbourne. It's a spectacle of racing, fashion and celebration — book well ahead if you'd like to attend.
No — and this is a common misconception. Victoria cancelled its planned 2026 Commonwealth Games in 2023, and the Games were instead awarded to Glasgow, Scotland (23 July–2 August 2026). So there is no Commonwealth Games in Melbourne or Victoria in 2026. The city's huge sporting calendar — the AO, the Grand Prix, the AFL Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup — carries on as always.
Autumn is festival central — March–April brings the Grand Prix, Moomba, the Food & Wine Festival and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in quick succession. Winter has the RISING arts festival and MIFF, and spring the AFL Grand Final and Spring Racing Carnival. There's genuinely something on year-round, which is part of what makes Melbourne such a rewarding city to time a trip around.
