Hervey Bay Whale Watching

Meet humpback whales where they choose to linger. Hervey Bay's sheltered waters are the one place on the migration where whales stop to rest, play and nurse — often metres from the boat.

Every winter, humpback whales travelling home to Antarctica detour into the calm waters behind K'gari, and Hervey Bay becomes one of the best places on Earth to see them. It was named the world's first Whale Heritage Site in 2019 for exactly this reason.

Our half-day cruise heads into Platypus Bay where the whales gather. Expect breaching, tail-slapping, spy-hopping — and the unforgettable moment a curious humpback 'mugs' the boat, drifting alongside for a closer look at you.

Season & sea conditions

Whale cruises run only during the season (roughly mid-July to late October), with the most active weeks in August and September. Morning departures usually mean the calmest seas and the best light. If you're prone to seasickness, take precautions before boarding.

Common questions

When does whale season run in 2026?

Roughly mid-July to late October 2026, peaking in August and September. Operators publish exact dates — generally from the second week of July.

Will we definitely see whales?

During the season, sightings are highly likely and we offer a sighting guarantee — if no whale is seen on your cruise, you can cruise again free. Outside the season the whales aren't here.

How close do the whales come?

Boats keep a regulated distance, but Hervey Bay's humpbacks are famously curious and often approach the vessel themselves, sometimes lingering alongside for many minutes.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes — it's a great family experience, with indoor cabins and outdoor decks. Bring warm layers and sun protection.
