Pick your suburb to suit your trip. Torquay is the most central and lively, with the best café-and-restaurant cluster right by the beach. Scarness and Pialba are quieter and family-friendly, still on the Esplanade. Urangan, near the pier and the Great Sandy Straits Marina, is handy for whale-watching cruises and the K'gari ferries at nearby River Heads. For a first visit, an Esplanade base at Torquay or Scarness is hard to beat.

When to book ahead
Reserve early for the whale-watching peak (August–September), the August Whale Festival, Queensland school holidays and long weekends — the best Esplanade properties book out and rates rise. If you're adding a K'gari overnight, book the island stay well ahead, as options there are limited.

It's too far from Brisbane (3.5 hours) for a comfortable day trip anyway. A long weekend covers the highlights; longer lets you add day trips and an island overnight.
