Getting around
There are no sealed roads on K'gari — travel is by high-clearance four-wheel drive on sand, or on a guided tour. Sand driving takes experience and the right vehicle and permits, so many visitors choose a guided trip and leave the driving to someone who knows the tides and tracks.
Be dingo-safe
K'gari has a wild dingo (wongari) population. Never feed them, always keep children and belongings close, walk in groups, and store food and bait securely. Following the guidance protects both visitors and the animals.
Pack and plan
- Sun protection, drinking water and insect repellent.
- Tide times — the beach is the main route and is governed by the tide.
- Cash and supplies, as services are limited.
- A leave-no-trace mindset on what is Butchulla Country and a World Heritage Area.
