Best time to visit Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is a year-round destination, but the calendar is shaped by the whales. Winter brings the humpbacks and the region's best weather; the warmer months are made for beaches and K'gari. Knowing the seasons — and when the crowds come — helps you time the trip you want. Here's how the year unfolds on the bay.
Winter: whales & the best weather
The headline is the whale season, roughly late July to October and peaking August–September. Happily, it coincides with Hervey Bay's finest weather: mild, dry, sunny winter days perfect for cruising, K'gari and the beaches all in one trip. The Whale Festival in August adds to the buzz. For most visitors, this June–September window is the sweet spot — great conditions and the whales together. Book ahead, as it's peak season.
Summer, spring & the beaches
Outside whale season, Hervey Bay is still a lovely calm-water escape. Spring and autumn are warm and comfortable, ideal for the beaches, K'gari and getting on the water. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hot and humid with afternoon storms and the main rainfall, but the sheltered bay stays swimmable and it's quieter for whales (there are none). If beach weather and fewer crowds matter more than whales, the warmer, non-peak months are a good choice.
When it's busiest
The peaks are the whale season (August–September), the August Whale Festival, and Queensland school holidays and long weekends — book accommodation and cruises well ahead and expect higher prices. For a quieter, better-value trip with still-excellent weather, aim for the shoulders (late July, October or spring) or travel midweek. Whenever you come, pack sun protection — the bay is sunny and mild for most of the year.

It depends what you want. For whales, come late July to October (peaking August–September). For warm beach and K'gari weather, the shoulder and summer months (roughly September to May) are lovely, if wetter and more humid in mid-summer. The sweet spot for many is the winter whale season — mild, dry, sunny days, perfect for cruising, K'gari and the beaches all at once. There's really no bad time.
Hervey Bay has a mild subtropical climate. Winter (Jun–Aug) is dry, sunny and pleasant (days around 22–24°C) — ideal touring weather and prime whale season. Summer (Dec–Feb) is hot and humid with afternoon storms and the region's main rainfall. Spring and autumn are warm and comfortable. The bay's sheltered water stays calm year-round, and it enjoys plenty of sunshine — pack sun protection whenever you come.
The humpback season runs from about late July to the end of October, with the peak in August and September when mothers and calves fill the bay.
