Hervey Bay day trips
Hervey Bay is a great base for exploring the wider Fraser Coast. Beyond the obvious day tour to K'gari, you can wander the heritage streets of Maryborough, drive the coloured sands of Rainbow Beach, or lose yourself in the forests and lakes of the Cooloola wilderness. Here are the best day trips to pair with your stay.
Maryborough
Just 30 minutes away, Maryborough is a beautifully preserved colonial river town — and the birthplace of P.L. Travers, creator of Mary Poppins, celebrated with a statue, themed streetscapes and the annual Mary Poppins Festival. Explore the grand heritage buildings and gardens, time your visit for the Thursday markets and the historic time-cannon, and enjoy a leisurely country lunch. It's an easy, charming half- or full-day from Hervey Bay.
Rainbow Beach & the coast
To the south, Rainbow Beach is a laid-back seaside town famous for its coloured sand cliffs, a long surf beach and the dramatic Carlo Sand Blow — a giant walk-on dune with sweeping sunset views. It's a southern gateway to K'gari and the Cooloola wilderness, with 4WD beach driving and dolphins at nearby Tin Can Bay. The scenic drive down makes it a great full-day adventure from Hervey Bay.
Cooloola & further afield
Inland and south, the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park offers forests, freshwater lakes, the Noosa Everglades and towering dunes — beautiful for walking, paddling and 4WD touring (some areas need a 4WD and park passes). Further north, Bundaberg (about 1.5 hours) adds its famous rum and, from November to March, the turtle nesting at Mon Repos. There's plenty to explore beyond the bay.

Bundaberg is around 1.5 hours' drive north — known for its famous rum distillery and, from November to March, the turtle nesting and hatching at Mon Repos (one of the largest loggerhead rookeries in the South Pacific). It's a longer day trip or an overnight, but a rewarding one if you're visiting in turtle season. Otherwise, the closer Fraser Coast towns make easier day trips from Hervey Bay.
