Getting to & around Hervey Bay
Hervey Bay is easy to reach — drive, fly or take the train from the south — and simple to get around once you're there. The Esplanade is walkable, tours offer pick-ups, and the K'gari ferries leave from nearby River Heads. Here's how to arrive, and how to move around the bay and out to the island.
Drive, fly or take the train
From Brisbane it's about 290 km and a 3.5-hour drive up the Bruce Highway. Short on time or coming from further away? Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport has direct flights from Brisbane and Sydney. You can also take the Queensland Rail Tilt Train to Maryborough West with a connecting coach, or a long-distance bus. Driving gives you a car for day trips; flying is the quickest way in for interstate visitors.
Getting around the bay
The Esplanade is walkable and cyclable, whale cruises and tours often include pick-ups, and there are local buses, taxis and rideshare — so you can manage a beach-and-whales stay car-free. That said, a car adds freedom for the pier, Botanic Gardens, the River Heads ferry and day trips. For K'gari, don't self-drive unless you're experienced on sand — take a guided 4WD tour instead.
River Heads & the marina
Two departure points matter. K'gari ferries leave from River Heads (about 20 minutes south of town) to the island's western side. Whale-watching cruises depart the Great Sandy Straits Marina at Urangan, at the eastern end of the Esplanade, with parking and often courtesy pick-ups. Factor in a little travel and check-in time for both — especially in the whale-season peak — and you'll have the bay's big experiences sorted.

Check current routes when booking, as regional flight schedules change.

Vehicle and passenger ferries (barges) leave from River Heads, about 20 minutes south of the town centre, crossing to Kingfisher Bay and Wanggoolba Creek on K'gari's calm western side.
