Hervey Bay Whale Watching

Sheltered behind K'gari, Hervey Bay is one of the world's great places to meet humpback whales.

Australia's whale-watching capital

Each year humpback whales pause in the protected waters of Hervey Bay on their southern migration, resting and socialising in the calm seas sheltered by K'gari. The bay is renowned for close, unhurried encounters.

When to go

The humpback season generally runs from around July to November, with the bay at its busiest with whales through the middle of that window. Because the water is so protected, trips here tend to be smoother than open-ocean whale watching elsewhere.

More than whales

Hervey Bay also makes the natural gateway to K'gari, with a relaxed esplanade, the long Urangan Pier and calm family beaches to fill the rest of a stay.
