At a glance
The short version
A guided small-group weekend, departing Brisbane Friday afternoon and returning Sunday evening.
Day by day
Friday to Sunday
A relaxed three-day structure with one full activity day and plenty of room to breathe either side of it.
Day 1 · Friday
Brisbane to Hervey Bay
Late-afternoon pickup from your Brisbane departure point. We head north on the Bruce Highway with a comfort stop along the way — around 3.5 hours of driving in total. You’ll arrive into Hervey Bay in the evening with time to settle into your hotel before dinner, which is at your own cost. Your tour leader runs through the next day’s plan over check-in, including final timing for whichever Saturday activity you’ve chosen.
Day 2 · Saturday
Your choice — whales or K’gari
After breakfast at the hotel, the coach group splits by activity — whale-watching guests head to Urangan Harbour, K’gari guests head to the barge. Both run as a full day with their own dedicated guide, picking up directly from your Hervey Bay hotel.
Whale watching cruise
A full-day cruise from Urangan Harbour, with lunch on board. Hervey Bay’s sheltered waters mean humpback whales rest here for two to three days at a time rather than passing through, so encounters are typically longer and calmer than open-ocean whale watching elsewhere on the coast.
K’gari 4WD day tour
The full-day guided 4WD bus tour across to K’gari, with lunch included. Central Station rainforest, a swim at Lake McKenzie, a float down Eli Creek, and the Maheno shipwreck. NPWS permit and barge crossing handled for you.
Evening back in Hervey Bay is free — the Esplanade has a good run of restaurants if you'd like recommendations from your tour leader.
Day 3 · Sunday
A relaxed morning, then home
Breakfast at the hotel, then a free morning to explore at your own pace — the Esplanade and Urangan Pier are an easy walk from most Hervey Bay accommodation, and your tour leader can point you toward the Botanic Gardens or a short Maryborough detour if you'd rather make use of the time that way. We depart Hervey Bay in the afternoon for the drive back to Brisbane, arriving in the evening.

Common questions
Do I choose whale watching or K’gari before booking, or on the day?
We ask for your preference at booking so we can lock in the whale cruise or the K’gari 4WD tour and ferry permit in advance, since both can sell out in peak periods. If you book outside whale season (December to June), the Saturday activity is the K’gari day tour. If you book in season (July to November) and aren't fussed either way, our specialist will recommend based on availability that week.
What's included in the Hervey Bay Weekend Escape?
Return coach transport from Brisbane, two nights' hotel accommodation in Hervey Bay, your Saturday activity (whale-watching cruise with lunch on board, or K’gari guided 4WD day tour with lunch and NPWS permit and ferry), and a Cooee tour leader for the full weekend. Breakfast is included both mornings at the hotel. Dinners and Sunday lunch are at your own cost, with recommendations provided.
Is whale watching available outside July to November?
No. Humpback whales are present in Hervey Bay from July through November only, with peak activity August to October. If your weekend falls outside that window, the Saturday activity is the K’gari guided 4WD day tour instead, which runs year-round.
How fit do I need to be for this tour?
Both Saturday options are accessible to most fitness levels. The whale-watching cruise involves a full day on a boat with seating and shaded deck areas; some swell is normal even in sheltered Hervey Bay waters, so anyone prone to seasickness should plan accordingly. The K’gari day tour involves walking on sand at several stops (boardwalks at Central Station, a beach walk at Eli Creek, steps at Lake McKenzie) but no strenuous hiking. Let us know about any mobility considerations when booking.
Can I extend the weekend or add extra nights in Hervey Bay?
Yes. Extra nights before or after the tour, at the same hotel or elsewhere in Hervey Bay, can be added at booking. Let your Cooee specialist know your preferred extension and we'll quote it alongside the standard weekend package.
