The whale-watching capital
Hervey Bay isn't just another whale-watching spot — it's the world's first Whale Heritage Site, and uniquely, the humpbacks stop to rest and play in the sheltered bay for days at a time, rather than passing by. That means calm-water cruises with astonishingly close, relaxed encounters — breaching, tail-slapping and curious "mugging" of the boats. Gateway to K'gari (Fraser Island)
Hervey Bay is the calm-water launch point for K'gari (Fraser Island) — the world's largest sand island and a World Heritage wonder of rainforest growing on sand, crystal-clear Lake McKenzie, the 75 Mile Beach highway, the Maheno shipwreck and Eli Creek. The pier, the beaches & day trips
The city itself is made for relaxing. Stroll or fish the historic Urangan Pier, one of Australia's longest, and wander the leafy Esplanade that links Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan. The calm, north-facing bay beaches are safe and gentle — perfect for families. And it's an easy base for day trips to heritage Maryborough (home of Mary Poppins) and the coloured sands of Rainbow Beach.

Hervey Bay is about 290 km north of Brisbane — roughly a 3.5-hour drive up the Bruce Highway. You can also fly into Hervey Bay (Fraser Coast) Airport from Brisbane and Sydney, or take the Queensland Rail Tilt Train to Maryborough West with a connecting coach. For the highlights, plan two to four days. You'll want a half-day whale-watching cruise (in season), at least a full day (ideally more) on K'gari, and time to enjoy the pier, beaches and Esplanade. For whales, come between late July and October (peaking August–September). For beach weather, the warmer months (roughly September to May) are lovely, and the winter whale season is mild, dry and sunny — arguably the best all-round time.
