One of the World's Rarest Ecosystems

The Noosa Everglades is one of only two everglade systems in the world โ€” the other being in Florida. Formed by the slow, meandering flow of the Noosa River and its tributaries through the ancient sedge swamps and paperbarks of Great Sandy National Park, the Everglades represent a living ecosystem of extraordinary fragility and beauty. Tea-tree tannins leach into the water, staining it the colour of amber and creating the mirror-perfect reflections that make this landscape so hauntingly beautiful and so visually unlike anywhere else in Australia.

The system covers the upper reaches of the Noosa River, from the vast shallow expanse of Lake Cootharaba (South East Queensland's largest lake) northward through the narrowing channels to Lake Cooroibah and into the reed-lined labyrinth of the upper Everglades proper. Here the paperbarks crowd in, the waterway narrows to a few metres, and the silence is absolute except for the calls of sea eagles, the splash of a turtle, and the steady rhythm of a paddle. On a still morning, the water becomes a perfect mirror โ€” sky above, sky below, the kayaker floating between two worlds.

The Great Sandy National Park, of which the Everglades forms a part, is listed in the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy Region โ€” a UNESCO-recognised biosphere. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded here, including white-bellied sea eagles, osprey, azure kingfishers, pelicans, jabiru storks, and the elusive great-billed heron. Freshwater turtles bask on logs, wallabies drink at dawn from the banks, and dolphins patrol the lower river year-round.

What You Might See

Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the Everglades system, along with diverse reptiles, mammals, and marine life in the lower river.

๐Ÿฆ…

White-Bellied Sea Eagle

The apex hunter of the Everglades. Nests in the tall paperbarks. Often seen hunting low over the water.

๐Ÿฆ

Azure Kingfisher

A brilliant flash of blue and orange, darting along the reed banks. One of Australia's most beautiful small birds.

๐Ÿฆ˜

Wallabies

Red-necked wallabies drink from the banks at dawn and dusk. Most often seen near the landing areas.

๐Ÿข

Freshwater Turtles

Broad-shelled and eastern long-necked turtles bask on logs in the upper reaches. Often undisturbed by kayaks.

๐Ÿฌ

Dolphins

Common bottlenose dolphins patrol the lower Noosa River year-round. Often seen from the cruise vessels.

๐Ÿฆข

Pelicans

Australian pelicans in large numbers on Lake Cootharaba โ€” particularly impressive at dawn when they lift as a flock.

๐ŸŠ

Freshwater Crocodiles

Occasionally sighted in the upper reaches. Shy, harmless to humans, and a remarkable sighting if you see one.

The Noosa River System

The Noosa River travels 145km from its headwaters in the Cooloola section of Great Sandy National Park to the ocean at Noosa Heads. The Everglades section runs through the upper reaches of the system โ€” from Lake Cootharaba (South East Queensland's largest lake at 17km long) northward through Lake Cooroibah and into the narrow upper channels.

Most tours depart from Elanda Point on the southern shore of Lake Cootharaba, or from Boreen Point. Some operators depart from Tewantin on the lower river and travel upstream. Guided tours navigate channels that aren't marked on maps and would be easy to get lost in without a guide.

The tea-tree water โ€” coloured by tannins from melaleuca (paperbark) trees โ€” is one of the defining visual characteristics of the Everglades. The tannin content also makes the water remarkably clear, with excellent underwater visibility, and is entirely natural.

The amber, tea-coloured water is entirely natural โ€” caused by tannins leaching from melaleuca (paperbark) trees, sedge roots, and other organic material in the surrounding wetlands. The same process colours rivers across northern Australia and is what gives the water its extraordinary mirror-like reflective quality. The water is clean and safe to swim in.

An everglade is a specific type of wetland ecosystem characterised by slow-moving water flowing through flat, vegetated lowlands over a long distance. The conditions that create everglade systems are extraordinarily rare โ€” they require specific geology, rainfall patterns, and an intact river system undamaged by flood mitigation or agricultural runoff. Only two places on Earth have them: Noosa, and the Florida Everglades.

Experienced paddlers can self-guide with their own equipment, launching from Elanda Point or Boreen Point on the shore of Lake Cootharaba. However, the upper channels of the Everglades are a maze and very easy to get lost in without local knowledge. Guided tours are strongly recommended for a first visit โ€” and the wildlife commentary you'll miss without a guide is genuinely irreplaceable.
