Overview

How Hinterland Farm Visits Work

Farm and producer visits are not part of our scheduled day tours — they're available as a private group experience by arrangement. The Sunshine Coast hinterland's small farms and artisan producers welcome visitors, but most operate on their own schedules and don't have the capacity for daily walk-ins with tour groups. A private booking lets us coordinate access, plan a route, and build a full day around the producers you're most interested in.

You enquire with your interests (cheese, honey, fruit, coffee, macadamias, ginger, or a mix), we design a bespoke itinerary, and we provide transport and a driver-guide for the full day. Pickup is door-to-door from Sunshine Coast accommodation or Brisbane CBD.

This is not a scheduled product. Pricing and availability depend on group size, which producers you'd like to visit, season, and your preferred dates. Contact us with your preferences and we'll put together a tailored quote within 24 hours. No standard rack rate — every itinerary is custom-built.

What You Can Visit

The Sunshine Coast hinterland — particularly the Maleny (425m elevation), Montville (400m), and Kenilworth areas — has a concentration of small-scale producers. The elevated plateau, volcanic soils, and reliable rainfall make it prime country for dairy, fruit, and apiary operations. Here are the types of farms and producers we can arrange access to.

Artisan Cheese

Maleny's dairies produce cheddar, brie, washed-rind, feta, and buffalo varieties from local milk. Maleny Cheese (Bucher family since 2004, Swiss Master Cheesemaker Markus Bucher) offers 30-minute guided factory tours with yoghurt tasting — 13 cheeses and 7 yoghurts. Kenilworth Dairies in the Mary Valley brings 65+ years of cheesemaking. Plus Maleny Food Co and Brouhaha Kitchen & Taproom.

Honey & Beekeeping

Hinterland apiaries produce native eucalyptus and European blossom honeys. Several offer beekeeping demonstrations, hive inspections, and comparative tasting flights covering ironbark, leatherwood, and macadamia blossom varieties. The volcanic soils and rainforest mix produce distinctive flavour profiles you won't find at supermarket level.

Macadamias & Nuts

The Sunshine Coast is prime macadamia country (Australia is the world's largest producer). Visit working orchards, see harvest and processing, and sample roasted, chocolate-coated, salted, and raw varieties straight from the farm. Some growers offer behind-the-scenes processing tours and on-site cafés.

Seasonal Fruit & Produce

Avocados, mangoes, pineapples (Glass House Mountains region), citrus, berries, and vegetables — seasonal availability varies. Buderim Ginger Factory at Yandina (Australia's only ginger producer of scale) offers production tours and tastings. Farm-gate stalls and pick-your-own where available.

What About Scheduled Tours?

Our scheduled hinterland tours pass through Maleny and Montville, where you'll have free time to browse village shops and tasting rooms — including cheese shops, fudge shops, and small producer outlets. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Minimum 2 guests, maximum 12. Most hinterland farms are small operations and can't accommodate larger groups. Pricing is per group — the cost per person decreases with more guests. For corporate groups beyond 12, contact us for split-vehicle quotes.

We work with a network of hinterland producers in the Maleny-Montville-Kenilworth triangle including Maleny Cheese (Bucher family Swiss-tradition cheesemakers since 2004 — 13 cheeses and 7 yoghurts including buffalo varieties), Maleny Food Co, Kenilworth Dairies (65+ years cheese making), Brouhaha Kitchen & Taproom, local honey apiaries, macadamia orchards, and the Buderim Ginger Factory at Yandina. The specific farms depend on your interests, availability, and season — tell us what you'd like and we'll build the route.

Yes — most producers sell at the farm gate. Cheese, yoghurt, honey, macadamias, preserves, ginger, and seasonal fruit. Bring cash for smaller stalls; larger operations like Maleny Cheese and the Ginger Factory take card. The Maleny Cheese shop is open 7-days 10am–3pm; the cafe runs Wed–Sun 10am–3pm.

Generally yes — farm visits are educational and hands-on. Let us know the ages in your group and we'll select child-friendly producers. Many farms have animals to see and touch (calves, chickens, goats), and the Ginger Factory has rides and themed activities for younger children. Beekeeping demos are typically age 8+ for safety.

At least 2 weeks — we need time to coordinate with individual producers. For peak holiday periods (Christmas, Easter, school holidays), book 3–4 weeks ahead. Maleny Cheese's guided 30-minute factory tours require pre-booking, and small honey apiaries often only open for groups by appointment.

Pricing on application (POA). Cost depends on group size (2–12), number of producer stops, vehicle requirement, and whether you add extras like a private cooking class, hinterland lunch, or Eumundi Markets morning. Contact us with your preferences for a tailored quote within 24 hours. As a guide, larger groups (8–12) bring the per-person cost down significantly.

Door-to-door pickup from Sunshine Coast accommodation (Caloundra to Noosa) or Brisbane CBD. Brisbane pickups add roughly 1.5 hours each way to the day. Pickup time is typically 8:00–8:30am for Sunshine Coast departures, earlier for Brisbane.

We'll suggest an alternative producer offering similar experiences. The hinterland has a deep bench of cheese, honey, and macadamia operations — if Maleny Cheese is unavailable mid-week, Maleny Food Co or Kenilworth Dairies may be perfect alternatives. Each itinerary is confirmed against producer availability before we lock dates.
