New Zealand itineraries
How long do you need in New Zealand? It depends how much you want to see — and the good news is that even a week delivers unforgettable scenery. Below are sample itineraries, from a focused single-island week to a grand tour of both, that you can shape to your interests and pace. They're starting points; we build the real thing around you.
7-day North or South
Short on time? Focus on one island. A 7-day South Island run might link Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook, the glaciers, Wānaka and Queenstown, with a Milford Sound cruise. A 7-day North Island loop could take in Auckland, Rotorua, Waitomo and Hobbiton, finishing in Wellington. Either keeps the driving comfortable and the highlights coming. See our South and North Island guides.
10-day & 2-week both-island trips
The most popular first trip is a 10-day highlights tour of both islands — Auckland, Rotorua and Hobbiton on the North, then Queenstown, Milford and the Southern Alps on the South, linked by a short flight. Stretch it to two weeks and you can add the Bay of Islands, Wellington, the West Coast glaciers, Lake Tekapo and a wine region — with time to breathe. A 3-week grand tour covers it all at a relaxed pace, walks and detours included.
Self-drive, guided or a mix
New Zealand suits every style. Self-drive is easy and scenic — just allow generous time, as the winding roads take longer than the map suggests. Small-group and guided tours handle the logistics and are ideal for first-timers or packed itineraries. Many travellers do a mix: guided for the big days (Milford, glaciers, wine), independent for the rest. We arrange whichever suits you. See our getting there guide.
New Zealand itineraries: your questions
For one island, allow 7–10 days; for a good taste of both islands, plan 2–3 weeks. A week gives you the headline sights of the North or South; ten days lets you link the icons of both; and 14–21 days allows a relaxed grand tour with time for walks, wine and detours. We tailor the length and pace to you. See our New Zealand tours.
A classic 10-day highlights loop pairs the best of both islands: Auckland, Rotorua, Waitomo and Hobbiton on the North, then Queenstown, Milford Sound and the Southern Alps on the South, linked by a short flight. With two weeks, add the Bay of Islands, Wellington, the glaciers and a wine region. See our North and South Island guides.
If you have a week or less, focus on one island to avoid rushing — the South for mountains, fiords and adventure; the North for culture, beaches and geothermal wonders. With 10+ days, combining both is very doable and hugely rewarding, linked by a quick inter-island flight or the scenic Cook Strait ferry. We'll advise based on your time and interests.
Both are great. Self-driving gives freedom and is easy on New Zealand's quiet, scenic roads (just allow generous time — distances take longer than they look). Guided and small-group tours take the planning, driving and bookings off your hands, which many travellers prefer for a first trip or a busy itinerary. We arrange either — or a mix. See our getting there guide.
For peak season (December–February) and for popular activities, Great Walk huts and accommodation, book several months ahead — the best places fill early. Shoulder seasons (autumn and spring) are quieter and easier. As a family-run agency since 1974, we can secure the right dates and build the whole trip around them. See our trip planning guide.
