Why We Exist

Protecting What We Show You

Great Barrier Reef Queensland conservation sustainable eco tourism

South East Queensland is one of the most biodiversity-rich regions in Australia — and one of the most pressured. The Scenic Rim's subtropical rainforest contains species found nowhere else on earth. Moreton Bay's seagrass meadows are the primary feeding grounds for Queensland's dugong population. K'gari is the world's largest sand island, a landscape so improbable that UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage site in 1992.

These environments face real and escalating threats — from urban encroachment, invasive species, climate-driven drought, and the ongoing legacy of land clearing. Cooee Eco Journeys was built on a straightforward conviction: responsible tourism, conducted at appropriate scale, with appropriate partners, is one of the most powerful conservation tools available. A guest who has spent two days in the Lamington rainforest, guided by someone whose family has lived in those forests for 60,000 years, leaves permanently changed in how they understand and advocate for that place.

The Scenic Rim tour was absolutely life-changing. Learning from Indigenous guides about traditional land management — practices that have sustained this rainforest for 60,000 years — while knowing my trip directly funded conservation made it profoundly meaningful. The eco-lodge was extraordinary too.

Minjerribah with Cooee was pure magic. Watching humpback whales from Point Lookout while learning Quandamooka Sea Country stories from a traditional custodian was an experience I couldn't have had any other way. The impact certificate was a thoughtful and meaningful touch at tour's end.

I've travelled extensively, but I've never encountered a company so genuinely committed to sustainability and community impact. The K'gari adventure was extraordinary, and the Butchulla heritage walks with traditional owners gave me access to stories and knowledge no guidebook has ever captured.

Eco Journey FAQ

Every tour is 100% carbon-offset through verified Australian reforestation and renewable energy projects — not international credits. We partner directly with Quandamooka, Butchulla, and Githabul traditional custodians for authentic cultural experiences. Fifteen percent of each booking is reinvested into Indigenous employment, cultural preservation, and local wildlife conservation. We use exclusively eco-certified accommodations, sustainable transport, and 95% local suppliers. You receive a personalised Trip Impact Certificate showing the exact projects your booking supported.

Queensland's subtropical climate is generally favourable year-round, but we have comprehensive weather contingency plans for all tours. Indoor cultural experiences, alternative activities, and flexible itineraries ensure meaningful experiences regardless of conditions. Safety is our priority — tours cancelled due to severe weather receive full refunds. The Minjerribah whale watching tours run June through November, when southern humpback migration is most active.

Our eco tours are designed for all fitness levels. Most walking activities are moderate — suitable for anyone with basic mobility on relatively flat or gently undulating terrain. The Lamington National Park walk on the Scenic Rim tour has an optional longer-grade option for more active guests. We provide detailed fitness requirements for each tour at the time of booking, and our guides adapt pace to the group.

We partner directly with traditional custodians — the Quandamooka peoples of Minjerribah, the Butchulla peoples of K'gari, and the Githabul and Wangerriburra peoples of the Scenic Rim — as guides, co-designers, and beneficiaries of our tours. Fifteen percent of every booking is reinvested into Indigenous employment, language preservation, cultural continuation projects, and community-led conservation initiatives. We never offer cultural experiences without direct partnership with the communities whose knowledge we're sharing.

All eco tour prices include eco-certified transport from Brisbane, sustainable accommodation for specified nights, all locally-sourced meals, Indigenous cultural experiences with traditional custodians, conservation project participation, full carbon offsetting, and your personalised Trip Impact Certificate. There are no hidden fees — the price you see is the price you pay.

We recommend booking 6–8 weeks in advance to secure your preferred dates and eco-lodge accommodation. The Minjerribah whale watching season (June–November) and peak conservation project periods fill quickly. Last-minute availability is limited due to our small group sizes and the need to coordinate Indigenous guide availability with adequate lead time. Call 0409 661 342 or email eco@cooeetours.com.au to check current availability.
