14 lines, 300+ stations, runs 5:30am–1:15am (2:15am Fri/Sat). Buy a Navigo Easy reloadable card (€2 + €1.69 per ride) or a Paris Visite pass for multi-day passes. Single tickets work but are inefficient. RATP is the operator.
Euro (EUR). Major cards accepted almost everywhere except small bistros and bakeries — carry ~€50 cash for the day. Aussie travel cards (Wise, Revolut, ING) avoid the worst FX rates. Tipping isn't expected (service compris) but rounding up or 5–10% for great service is appreciated.
Lunch noon–2pm, dinner 7:30pm–10pm. Coffee at the counter (au comptoir) is cheaper than seated. "Une carafe d'eau" gets you free tap water. "Bonjour" entering a shop and "merci, au revoir" leaving — non-negotiable, even at boulangeries.
EU eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) cheaper than Australian roaming — ~$20 AUD for 5GB/30 days. Free Wi-Fi in most cafés and museums. Google Maps and Citymapper both excellent in Paris. Aussie roaming plans (Telstra International, Optus) work but cost more.
Paris is generally safe but pickpockets are real around Eiffel Tower, Trocadéro, Sacré-Cœur and on Métro Line 1. Cross-body bag with zips, no phone in back pocket, ignore "did you drop this ring" / petition scams. Stay aware; don't be paranoid.

Late April to mid-June and September to mid-October offer the best balance — pleasant weather, fewer crowds than peak summer, and outdoor cafés in full swing. Avoid August if possible (many local restaurants and shops close for the French summer holidays — the city feels emptier). December has its own magic with Christmas markets and the Galeries Lafayette light displays.

Allow a full day; the palace, Marie Antoinette's hamlet, and the gardens easily fill 6-7 hours.

The Paris Métro is extensive, efficient and cheap — buy a Navigo Easy card or a 10-ride 'carnet' rather than single tickets. Most arrondissements are also genuinely walkable, and many of our tours use the Métro as part of the experience. We don't recommend driving in central Paris. Uber works reliably for evening returns.
