Brisbane Wineries
Queensland's Wine Regions Worth the Drive

Most people don't think "wine country" when they think of Queensland — yet four distinctive wine regions sit within day-trip range of Brisbane, each shaped by different altitude, soil, and climate. Mt Tamborine on the 550m volcanic plateau (45-60 min); the Scenic Rim's volcanic hinterland (60-90 min); Mt Cotton's Sirromet (30 min, with Granite Belt-sourced fruit); and the Granite Belt around Stanthorpe (Queensland's only Geographical Indication wine region at 800-1,500m, 3 hours). This is the operator-level guide to which cellar doors deliver, how long each region takes, and how to make a wine day out from Brisbane work.

In short. When people think Australian wine, Queensland rarely tops the list — yet some of the country's most distinctive boutique wineries sit just beyond Brisbane's city limits. From misty mountain vineyards to high-altitude granite country, four wine regions surround the city, each with its own character.

Within an easy drive of the CBD, Mt Tamborine (45-60 minutes, 550m volcanic plateau), the Scenic Rim (60-90 minutes, volcanic soils), Mt Cotton (30 minutes, the Sirromet cellar-door experience), and the Granite Belt around Stanthorpe (3 hours, 800-1,500m altitude — Queensland's only Geographical Indication wine region) showcase remarkably diverse styles. Cool evenings, passionate small-scale producers, and hands-on cellar-door experiences define every region.

Many Brisbane locals discover these wineries independently — equally many prefer the ease of a guided day. Our Mt Tamborine wine tours handle 4-5 boutique cellar doors with a 2-course gourmet lunch from $159pp Classic / $229pp Premium. For ongoing access to cellar-door releases after a tour, Cooee Wine is our complimentary concierge service — sommelier-curated cases, international shipping to 40+ destinations, cellar-door exclusives.

The Four Regions in Detail

Brisbane's Four Wine Regions

Each region distinct enough that we treat them as separate tour products. Below: the featured cellar doors, what makes the wine character of each region different, travel timings, and how to plan a visit.

Region 1 · Mt Cotton · 30 min from Brisbane

Mt Cotton · The Sirromet Experience

The closest cellar-door experience to Brisbane CBD — Sirromet Wines at 938 Mount Cotton Road, just 30 minutes south of Brisbane in the Redlands. Worth its own region because Sirromet operates a 560-acre property with state-of-the-art winery, multiple restaurants (Tuscan Terrace, Restaurant Lurleen's, Cellar Door Café), and onsite glamping accommodation (Sanctuary by Sirromet) — a full day out in itself. The vineyards themselves are mostly in the Granite Belt around Ballandean, but grapes are trucked to Mt Cotton for winemaking and the entire visitor experience is at Mt Cotton with Moreton Bay views.

Founded: 2000 by Terry Morris. Awards: 900+ national and international. Specialities: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Viognier; emerging Italian varietals.

Region 2 · Mt Tamborine · 45-60 min from Brisbane

Mt Tamborine · The Headline Day Tour

Perched on the 550m volcanic plateau just 45-60 minutes from Brisbane (or 30 minutes from the Gold Coast), Mt Tamborine is Queensland's most accessible wine region and the destination most of our wine guests choose. The volcanic basalt topsoil, 5-7°C cooler-than-coast climate, and the boutique winery culture (mostly family-owned, often family-met) produce surprising cool-climate Cabernet, Chardonnay, Verdelho, and occasional Pinot. Wangerriburra Country (Yugambeh language).

Region 3 · Scenic Rim · 60-90 min from Brisbane

Scenic Rim · Volcanic Hinterland

Stretching across volcanic soils and rolling hills south of Brisbane, the Scenic Rim produces wines with quietly distinctive character. The region is younger than Mt Tamborine and the Granite Belt as a wine destination — emerging is the right word — but combines agricultural heritage with serious viticulture and the most intimate cellar door experiences of the four regions covered here. Mununjali Country.

Region 4 · Granite Belt · 3 hr south-west · Best as overnight

Granite Belt · Queensland's Wine GI

The serious wine destination of the four. The Granite Belt around Stanthorpe is Queensland's only official Geographical Indication wine region, sitting at 800-1,500m altitude — the highest mainland Australian wine region outside the Snowy Mountains. Cold winters, dry summers, and granite-derived sandy soils produce the famous "Strange Birds" alternative varieties: Tempranillo, Saperavi, Fiano, Petit Verdot, Viognier, plus serious Shiraz and Cabernet from the classics. Bigambul, Githabul and Kambuwal Country. Best done as a private hire day trip or 2-day overnight option because the drive is 3 hours each way.

Must-Experience Wineries

  • Ballandean Estate — Queensland's oldest family-owned winery, established 1932, three generations of the Puglisi family. Award-winning across multiple varieties. ballandeanestate.com
  • Symphony Hill Wines — Organic practices, alternative varieties, particularly strong on Petit Verdot and Tempranillo. symphonyhillwines.com.au
  • Pyramids Road Wines — Small-batch, premium cool-climate focus, family-run, one of the region's most respected producers. pyramidsroad.com.au
  • Hidden Creek, Heritage Estate, Just Red Wines — three more we regularly include on extended itineraries.

Insider Touring Tips

Make the Most of Queensland Wine Country

Six practical tips from 50+ years of running these tours. The kind of advice we give guests on the phone when they ring asking how to plan a wine day.

Research & Reserve

Check opening hours and book cellar door tastings ahead, particularly on weekends and during harvest (March-April). Many boutique wineries require appointments — especially the smaller Granite Belt producers and the family-only operations on Mt Tamborine.

Dress for Comfort

Comfortable walking shoes for vineyard tours and the inevitable barrel-hall step-overs. Pack layers — cellar doors are deliberately cool, the coach is air-conditioned, and Mt Tamborine and the Granite Belt sit 5-7°C cooler than the coast even in summer.

Capture the Moments

Bring a camera for vineyard vistas, mountain backdrops, and cellar door experiences. The Hill Inlet-style aerial shots aren't available, but Mt Tamborine vineyards in afternoon golden hour and Granite Belt vines in autumn colour are camera-worthy.

Taste Adventurously

Try Queensland's distinctive varieties — Verdelho (Tamborine specialty), Tempranillo and Saperavi (Granite Belt "Strange Birds"), Petit Verdot, Fiano, and the unexpected blends. These showcase Queensland terroir in ways no Barossa Shiraz can.

Stay Safe

Never drink and drive. Join a guided tour or arrange a designated driver. Mt Tamborine's winding mountain roads are particularly unforgiving — getting back from a winery in late afternoon should not be DIY after tasting.

Sirromet has won 900+ national and international awards since opening in 2000. A common point of confusion — many guides list Sirromet under "Granite Belt" because the fruit is from there, but you visit Mt Cotton.

Expect 4-6 tastings per cellar door, totalling 15-24+ samples across the day depending on tour length. Tastings are generous pours designed for appreciation rather than consumption — you're never obligated to finish, water is always available, and drivers actively encourage savouring. Quality over quantity.

Smart casual works well. Comfortable closed shoes for vineyard walking; layers for variable weather (cool cellar doors and air-conditioned coaches); hat and sunscreen for outdoor areas; relaxed-but-polished for winery restaurants. Mt Tamborine and the Scenic Rim are 5-7°C cooler than the coast so a light jumper is sensible most of the year.

Yes — wine tours offer plenty beyond tasting: spectacular vineyard scenery, photography, insights into winemaking and viticulture, gourmet food, artisan products, and social connections. Most wineries offer non-alcoholic alternatives (grape juice, teas, coffee). Non-drinker tickets discounted where group composition allows.

Queensland wine regions are good year-round, but the standouts are:

  • Autumn (March-May): Harvest season, the Granite Belt vines turn colour, wine festivals.
  • Winter (June-August): Cool weather red wine focus on Mt Tamborine and Granite Belt — both sit at altitude and run noticeably cooler than the coast.
  • Spring (September-November): Budding vines, wildflowers, perfect weather.
  • Summer (December-February): Lush green vineyards. Mt Tamborine is 5-7°C cooler than the coast — refreshing.

Weekends and harvest festivals (March-April) book 4-6 weeks ahead.
