From Rockhampton

The Capricorn Coast is the stretch of central Queensland coastline named for the Tropic of Capricorn that runs through Rockhampton, just inland. It's quieter than the Whitsundays, easier than Cairns, and home to the southern reach of the Great Barrier Reef. Five destinations sit within forty minutes of each other — Yeppoon, the lagoon town and the hub; Cooee Bay, the headland with the 1848 shipwreck story; Great Keppel Island, the Southern Reef's quiet jewel; Byfield National Park, the coastal rainforest at the northern edge; and Emu Park, the coastal village with the famous Singing Ship. We acknowledge the Darumbal people as Traditional Custodians of the mainland Capricorn Coast and the Woppaburra people as Traditional Custodians of the Keppel Group of islands.

Capricorn Coast travel tips

The fundamentals that make a Capricorn Coast trip easier — when to come, how to get here, and how to combine the five destinations.

☀️ Best Time

April–October is the sweet spot — warm dry days, low humidity, calm seas. June–November adds humpback whale season. November–March is hotter and humid, with marine stinger season across the whole coast.

✈️ Getting There

Fly to Rockhampton (1 hour from Brisbane) and drive 40 minutes east to Yeppoon. Or 7 hours up the Bruce Highway by car from Brisbane. Cooee Tours runs guided Capricorn Coast itineraries.

🏠 Where to Stay

Yeppoon for the most choice — beach resorts, holiday units, B&Bs. Emu Park for a quieter village feel. Byfield for camping or rainforest cabins. Great Keppel for an overnight on the island.

🚗 Getting Around

A car is essential — public transport between the destinations is limited. The Scenic Highway between Yeppoon and Emu Park is itself a beautiful drive. 4WD opens up Byfield's coastal section.

🌊 Reef & Stingers

Marine stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters November–May. Stinger suits recommended for ocean swimming during that window. The Yeppoon Lagoon and creek-side swimming holes are unaffected.

📅 Time it Right

If you can, time a visit around the August Yeppoon Pineapple Festival, the first Sunday of any month for Bell Park markets at Emu Park, or the August Cooee Championship at Cooee Bay.

🗺️

One coast, five distinct experiences

Most visitors do Yeppoon plus one or two others — a beach base, with day-trips to Great Keppel Island, Cooee Bay, Emu Park or Byfield. Cooee Tours can put it together for you. Contact us to plan.
