The Capricorn Coast is where Central Queensland meets the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Strung along the shore just north-east of Rockhampton, on the Tropic of Capricorn, it centres on the relaxed towns of Yeppoon and Emu Park — and looks out to the Keppel Bay islands, a scatter of some 18 islands crowned by Great Keppel Island, with its 17 beaches, clear water and fringing coral.
Back on the mainland, there are long surf beaches, the free Yeppoon Lagoon, Emu Park’s Singing Ship, and — to the north — the 4WD wilderness of Byfield, all wrapped in an unhurried, uncrowded feel the bigger reef gateways lost long ago. Where is the Capricorn Coast and how do you get there?
The Capricorn Coast is the beach strip just north-east of Rockhampton in Central Queensland, on the Tropic of Capricorn. Yeppoon is the main town, about 40 minutes from Rockhampton and its airport. When is the best time to visit?
